Sony PS4 VR headset vs Oculus Rift in 2014

By Updated on

We have some rather surprising, but potentially very exciting news to bring you now. It has been strongly hinted that Sony will unveil and release a VR headset in 2014, a device that will offer similar functionality to the Oculus Rift headset that you may be familiar with already.

This may raise one or two eyebrows, firstly the fact that Sony are possibly trying to steal some thunder from the Oculus Rift and secondly, the fact that Sony has already ventured into this territory with their rather pricey HMZ-T2 personal 3D viewer.

The guys over at Eurogamer have the scoop as they are already treating this as a confirmed fact thanks to their close sources. Even more interesting is that this mystery VR viewer was apparently supposed to be due an unveiling at GamesCom, only for Sony to change their mind at the last minute to instead leave a reveal until 2014.

One game that is already thought to have support for Sony’s VR headset is DriveClub, with players being able to view the cockpit of a car simply by looking around with the headset attached. It’s obviously early days yet, but could this be seen as a major blow to the hopes of Oculus Rift being a success?

Alternatively, Sony’s device could make the VR headset as a whole more mainstream, thus making some consumers more interested in the Oculus Rift as an alternative device. The one problem that appears to be present though, is the worrying factor involving motion sickness that is attached to these headsets.

As we await more details on this, give us your reaction on Sony’s plans to offer a VR headset to use with the PS4.
