Roku 3 vs. Apple TV 3G

By Updated on

While some of you would have already given Google Chromecast a go, most others feel as though it needs a little longer to mature, and so choose the Roku 3 or Apple TV 3G instead. The reason for this is because they have proven themselves time and again, although they have had longer to develop. So if you had the money, which of the two would be better to spend your money on?

To help make your mind up we have done some digging around and found two videos for your viewing pleasure. You will see that the Roku 3 is a very small device and is as able to fit into the palm of your hand, so it will not take up much space around your TV.

One of the most important features (apart from content) is the ports, and there are five different types, power port, Ethernet, fill size HDMI and a microSD card slot allowing you to expand the storage. Oh, and let’s not forget the USB port giving you even more scope.

All of those connectivity options help to make the Roku 3 a great all-round device, but how does it compare to the 3rd generation Apple TV? It is a little larger than the other content streaming device, but it is still pretty small itself.

There is not as many ports on the Apple TV 3G though, as you only have your power port, full size HDMI, USB port and an optical audio out for improved sound and an Ethernet port. There is no expandability option because it lacks that card slot. Okay, it does have USB, but it cannot be used to expand as it is just for minor maintenance.

If you found the first video a little slow and long-winded then the second one will be more to your liking because it all seems more exciting.

This video is a prize fight between the Roku 3 and Apple TV 3G, where they will take a look at several key areas, with the first being design. The former device had a revised look and has gone down well with the reviewers, but the classic look of the Apple TV wins that round.

User Interface and Navigation is important to these devices and the Roku 3 has seen a major revamp, which was needed because it is now much easier to navigate. Apple TVs UI is elegant, but it needs to be simplified, but it lacks customization and the search function is shocking.

These are just some of the key points taken from both videos, but once you have watched them we would love to know which of the two you have chosen?
