The Toyota Chairman has been very vocal in the past about how much he would love to revive the Supra; so much so that he said their next new sports car should be an all-new Toyota Supra. Well, it looks as though this could become a reality thanks to their partnership with BMW.
It is no secret that BMW and Toyota are teaming up to develop a new sports car, and that new vehicle could be the BMW Z5, the successor to the not so popular Z4. What we find so interesting about this is how it could possibly share the same platform as a new Supra.
According to Focus.de, BMW is already working on the successor to the Z4, which they believe is very important considering the Z4 has not sold the kind of numbers they had hoped. However, if what we have learned is true then the Z5 and Toyota has great potential.
The proposed new Toyota Supra performance could be between 211 and 367 horsepower, with an option for a hybrid version, which also goes for the Z5. This joint venture will see the engine built by BMW, which is a good thing, but we are not certain what Toyota will bring to the table.
Let’s say for arguments sake this is the real deal, then we are not certain how BMW and Toyota will differentiate between the Z5 and Supra, but we hope to learn more later this year. However, we do like the thought of a hybrid option for both vehicles.
We say this because it follows what Ferrari and McLaren are doing with their LaFerari and P1 because it offers so much more performance when you need it.
In closing: We do find it strange why BMW and Toyota would need to work with each other on such a vehicle. Both are more than capable of doing things on their own, as they have proven time and again, so with that in mind do you believe they will do a good enough job together with the Z5 and Supra or should they go it alone?
