Transform Microsoft Kinect into a 3D scanner with Skanect

By Updated on

3D technology is a strange thing, because while some areas are flourishing, others are struggling. Many of us assumed that the 3D TV would be the next big thing, but we have seen that consumers have been slow to convince, although we all know how things like this can take to convince those of you out there.

Then there is 3D printing, as this technology just gets better and better, and as such has become far more popular. One of the reasons for this is because you can now get a 3D printer that is portable enough to fit into your home.

Okay, this is all well and good, but there is still far more to 3D technology, as we have just scratched the surface, that is until now. We say this, because 3D scanning now looks to be the next big thing, or so we hope.

Microsoft Kinect 3D capabilities
– If you have been waiting for a low-cost solution to be able to make use of the Kinect sensor, and 3D scanning software, then the wait is over, as Skanect allows you to transform Microsoft Kinect into a 3D scanner.

You will need to be using OS X in order to take advantage of this new software, but looking at the video below, it’s certainly worth giving the system a go. In the video you’ll see how the Kinect device captures a person in the room and then transform this into a 3D representation.

The price of Skanect software is just €99 plus VAT for commercial users, or free if you wish to make use of the software for non-commercial use. Download here.

While this is an affordable option, you have to remember the cost of the Kinect sensor; we wonder how long it will be before you are able to input a series of images instead?
