Street Fighter 5 release rumors without substance

By Updated on

While some of you are obviously very happy that new Street Fighter IV content is coming, others are a little disappointed to see that this new content is only coming in the form of Ultra SFIV which will add just five new characters, on top of the current roster for the game that we have seen to date.

With this in mind, rumors and speculation has begun to gather pace on the possibility of Capcom already secretly working on a Street Fighter 5 game, one that will be developed specifically for the next-gen PS4 and Xbox One consoles. While we would all like this rumor to be true, Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono has delivered a dose of reality for us this week, basically stating that the game isn’t even on their agenda at the moment.

In a somewhat generous reply, Ono answered a fan’s question on Twitter when asked directly if Street Fighter V was in development. Aside with debunking the rumor completely, Ono also decided to reveal that it wouldn’t be happening any time soon, due to an apparent lack of R&D budget and staff to get the game done.

You wouldn’t have thought that a company such as Capcom would have any problems financially, but we do understand that staffing issues may be more bigger problem. Don’t forget that the team will also be working on Ultra Street Fighter IV throughout 2014, so Capcom would need to find a separate team or at least wait a significant period of time before even thinking about starting up again on Street Fighter 5.

When it does happen though, we fully expect it to be amazing. The first Street Fighter on next-gen hardware is going to be a moment to savor indeed and don’t forget by then both consoles should have a large install base to make the business decisions a lot smoother behind closed doors.

Would you like to see Street Fighter 5 soon, or do you think it is too early yet?
