It is that time of the month again, where happy PS3 users can look forward to another big game landing on their console, as part of Sony’s going Instant Game Collection. This month, it’s a little more exciting as Microsoft has also entered the free game bandwagon, giving away select titles to Xbox Live Gold members each month.
Unfortunately though, the first game that Microsoft are giving away is hugely disappointing and bears no similarity as to what Sony will be offering to both EU and US PS Plus subscribers. If you don’t already know, the big game for the July 2013 PS Plus update is none other than Battlefield 3 – yours to keep as long as you are a PS Plus subscriber, which you probably will be as you move over to PS4 later this year.
While this is obviously awesome news for those that subscribe to the service, it’s a little less exciting for Xbox Live Gold members, as the free game for July is Defense Grid – a tower defense based game. To make matters worse, we and everyone else were under the impression that the first two games that would be offered would be Assassin’s Creed 2 and Halo 3.
Major Nelson has since apologized for the confusion, but at the same time stated that he was unsure as to why gamers were getting the wrong impression. Almost embarrassingly, this wrong impression had come from Microsoft’s own Xbox Support Twitter account, who were happily messaging everyone saying that Assassin’s Creed 2 and Halo 3 would be the games for July, as you’ll see in the evidence below.

Back to Battlefield 3 though, what an amazing free game for PS Plus members to enjoy. That is not the only game either on offer, as you can see what else will be coming to PS3 and PS Vita in July here. We think it’s great that Microsoft has finally stepped up to the plate to offer free games, but they really need to communicate better with their customers to avoid a repeat of similar situations in the future.
Battlefield 3 Vs Defense Grid is obviously no contest this month. If you are an Xbox Live Gold member, let us know if you are feeling a little hard done by after expecting Assassin’s Creed 2 and Halo 3 to release.
