Square-Enix are almost ready to unleash their long awaited HD remasters of Final Fantasy X and X-2 onto the PS3 and PS Vita systems. Fans are very eager to find out what plans the famed developer has after this in relation to other remasters, but unfortunately it looks like the dreams of a Final Fantasy VII remake in HD are still miles away from being realized.
Final Fantasy VII remains the best Final Fantasy game to date in a lot of gamer’s minds, but it looks like Square-Enix are still fairly content to keep fans waiting until as long as necessary. It would be an instant gold mine if a remaster of VII ever came out, or indeed an HD version of Final Fantasy VIII which is arguably a close second.
However, Square-Enix Final Fantasy director Yoshinori Kitase has revealed in a recent interview that the game that would actually be receiving the remaster treatment, should they carry on – is Final Fantasy XII. FF12 is a PS2 game that released in 2006 and went on to receive a perfect 40/40 from Famitsu, as well as a perfect score from Eurogamer and numerous Game of the Year awards.
Despite that, it is not considered one of the best Final Fantasy games among fans, but of course a HD remaster could do a good job in giving the game a fresh appeal once again. Final Fantasy XII HD would also be the logical choice after Final Fantasy X and X-2 HD, so perhaps we will see an announcement of this game in 2014 – after sales of the first two games have begun.
It looks like Square-Enix will only carry on however, if Final Fantasy X HD and X-2 HD are proved to be a hit among fans. We know for a fact that Final Fantasy X HD is in very high demand on the PS Vita, although it’s a shame that Square-Enix can’t fit both games on disc unlike the PS3 version which comes with X-2 HD on the disc.
What are your thoughts on this? Are you sad to see that there is still no movement on a Final Fantasy VII remake? Would you support the decision to remake Final Fantasy XII or not?
