Waiting around for Office for iPad to become available has been a long and drawn out process, and just when you thought there was going to be some good news, Microsoft has given iPad users a swift kick in the family jewels.
We say this as they have just released the Office Mobile app but has too many problems, the first is because it is only for those who subscribe to Office 365, and the other is that this is an iPhone only app.
Okay, so it’s good to see that Microsoft has released Office for iPhone, but those limitations are not, as there are still people out there who do not wish to pay a yearly fee to access Office, as they do with the 365 service. While it may work out cheaper over a 12-month period to go with Office 365, many people keep their Office software for years, and so having to pay a subscription would end up being a far more expensive option.
On the positive side, the new Office Mobile app is free to use for Office subscribers and allows them to be able to edit Excel, PowerPoint and Word files. The app is pretty similar to the Windows Phone version, but we do have one big issue here, and that’s the fact that the iPhone screen could be too small to edit these files, and so would be very easy to make a mistake.
We have to see this as a step in the right direction, because while it is not the news we would’ve hoped, it will be great if you have Office 365 and you have the ability to edit your files stored in the Cloud via your iPhone. The release of this app could be a bad sign though, as we may never see an Office for iPad app, although is Microsoft willing to turn away the kind of money they would make with this release?
