Fallout 4 expected on PS4 to stop financial suicide

By Daniel Chubb - Jun 2, 2013

We can understand why Microsoft would want to gain the unannounced Fallout 4 game as an exclusive for Xbox One, and this would follow a pattern the company is known for by using its large cash reserves to purchase exclusive games and timed exclusives for DLC.

Fallout 4 on PS4 to stop financial suicide – the opinion of most gamers is pretty clear since hearing the exclusive rumors, and that’s the idea of limiting Fallout 4 to one system would be financial suicide for Bethesda. This viewpoint could be challenged once you take into account the amount of money Microsoft would need to pay, but in our opinion it won’t happen and you’ll almost certainly see Fallout 4 launch on both PS4 and Xbox One.

Pete Hines recently commented on development for both the Xbox One and PS4, and he explained both have “been great to work with and develop for”. It is not clear what games are being developed for next-gen and if this would include Fallout 4, but considering the time since the last game in this franchise you can almost guarantee it.

Fallout 4 gamer feedback in relation to systems – we’ve heard a lot of support for seeing Fallout 4 release within the next year, and there’s bad feeling towards any exclusive deal being done. One gamer stated, “I hope it releases on PS4, I would take a week off work for that”.

Another commenter said, “I doubt they’d make Fallout 4 an exclusive for Xbox One, especially since the systems will be easier to develop for than the old systems”. Another PS3 users said, “Bethesda won’t want to further alienate their PlayStation fan base”.

Do you believe Bethesda would limit their Fallout 4 audience to one system? We also need to take into account the early PS4 and Xbox One high price points, which would mean a lot of gamers would stay on PS3 and Xbox 360. This further highlights the need for Fallout 4 on current generation systems as well.

We also previously looked at the likely time from Fallout 4 announcement to release date, and this should be around a year with a launch expected in 2014. We’ve seen a few blogs spinning the idea of a release in 2015, but this is something we highly doubt.

WAIT! Fallout has been a PC EXCLUSIVE sins fallout 1 to fallout tactics! The consoles are lucky to have fallout and fallout would never be a console exclusive!

  • blake

One thing Microsoft gets what Microsoft wants thats all realy it may not be fair but well

  • blake

And yes ps4 ps3 xbox360 xbox1 pc deserve it everyone is used to a certain system I know how much of a pain it is to switch systems trust me

  • blake

Microsoft would probably go as far as to take Bethesda under their wing like bungie kind of bungie was seperate with a kick so Bethesda could do that Microsoft has lots o money so yeah but it is unfair for ps4 im xbox oh and no coop Bethesda u crazy

  • slims_post

I’m all for sharing but why would it be financial suicide? Microsoft would obviously be paying for it, Epic haven’t gone bust over Gears of War have they? Anyway hope it’s available to everyone, I’m not selfish or spoilt.

As I see it, having exclusives will become very difficult for the next gen consoles. Because making an AAA game has become really expensive and no company (Sony/Microsoft) would like to set up a lot of exclusive studios and allow them to make single game every 3-5 years. The studios who’re making games will continue to make games for both studios and have a larger profit from both platforms. Also new individual platforms will come up with newer games…

  • Shadowno

Bethesda usually sticks to making DLC exclusivity deals, so I doubt you’d see a major gap between the release of the actual games. If i’m wrong, however, it’s gonna suck, cause i’m really looking forward to Skyrim with guns.

  • The fact that the install base for the Xbox One and PS4 would be so low means that Bethesda could gamble with Fallout 4 being an Xbox One exclusive, especially if Microsoft were willing to open their wallets. If it was on current gen, there probably wouldn’t be as much incentive to do this, but Fallout 4 would be huge if it were exclusive even for a year.

    • gamerguy

Bethesda would never do anything so stupid again! They already apologized for that piss poor port for F3, Valve did the same! You will never see independent studios acting like such bitches again! M$ burned them – they’ve learned their lessons the idiots!

      • Let’s be honest, I’ve heard so many Sony fans say they weren’t going to buy anymore Bethesda games, but they always end up buying them. Skyrim was so broken on PS3, yet people bought it, the DLC came to PS3 like a year late, but people still bought it. I’m just saying that money talks, and MS has a lot of it.

        • AwkwardTurtle42

PS3 users didn’t know it would be broken before launch. Bethesda went on about how it was running on a new engine and Pete Hines said that the PS3 and 360 versions would be equal (he lied). The problem with the lag on the PS3 version was that it only kicked in after you had been playing for a while, only OPM UK took this into account in their review, the rest missed it until later on and gave the game near-perfect reviews.

Even then some people only had a PS3 and had no other way of playing Skyrim, so they just held out for a patch and later the DLC. The DLC was also half-price for the first week, probably to get back the fans that Bethesda had lost because of all the issues with the PS3 version.

Yes, I’m another person who’s not buying any more Bethesda games on the PS3, but if they can get their act together on the PS4 then I’ll buy TES VI and Fallout 4 because I’m a fan of these series and want to play them, but minus the lag and other performance issues.

  • Looking forward to playing it on the Wii U

    • IceKoldKilla

I’m looking forward to playing it on the Wii and Nintendo 3DS! Can’t wait!

    • Chris Asher

Fingers crossed for a Neo Geo release!

Wow, PauperStation fans are getting absolutely desperate in their spreading of BS. This will NEVER be exclusive to PauperStation.

    • generic-user-name

Can’t you read? The article says nothing about it being exclusive to the Playstation. I guess I shouldn’t expect a bitter, jealous fanboy to actually use his brain though. Anyway, gotta play my The Last of Us demo, later brosef.

    • awaiken

Did you seriously just say Pauperstation? Get Microsoft’s shaft out of your mouth.

  • Dakan45

Who on their right mind would limit a game on one platform?

Listen people, in the past exlusives existed because you couldnt just “port” games, you had to remake them from scratch. Also the console owner paid good devs to make strong exlusives to sell their platforms.

Now, NO ONE wants to make exlusives, they want more sales, the only reason exlusives exist is because sony and ms pay hundrends of millions each year for them to be made and developers agree with that since they dont have the budget to make those games their own, or they cant get published by dumb publishers.

Take a look at halo and bungie. They were an fps company on Mac pcs, then ms bought them put them to work on xbox, and forced them to make ODST and reach in order to work till the contract is finished, when it was done, ms kept milking halo and bungie had enough money to go multiplat, thats all, no one does exlusives because they WANT to do it.

    • IceKoldKilla

I think the only reason would be that M$ would be willing to pay A LOT making up for potential PS3/PS4 sales. Meaning guaranteed money upfront and enough to work on DLC and market the game. Or whatever else they need it for…aside from the NEXT Fallout. Anyways you’re pretty much right. And I don’t think it’ll end up an exclusive. Also what’s with not mentioning PC? The series started on there and has always been on there.

      • Dakan45

Ms paid rockstar 50 million for times exlusivity on gta iv dlcs, the numbers are insanse. They basicly buying dlc for their platform, its riddiculus

        • gamerguy

That is the level they have to stoop to!

    • awaiken

There is no incentive for third parties to do exclusivity anymore, these rumors are ridiculous. Bethesda has a tight relationship with the PC community as well, and I don’t see them alienating those gamers either. And with PS4 gaining so much traction compared to XboxOne lately, I don’t see them ever committing to any exclusivity.

  • Michael Clanton

This article is asinine…. bathesda big games like fallout and elder scrolls sold way better on microsoft systems, i dont see exclusive, but i do see times exclusive. Also, saying something is financial suicide based on a fan boy opinion is nonsense…if that was the case, then every ps3 exclusive would be doomed…while they sale decent, the 3 block busters in video games are cod, gta, and halo. Mixed with sony horrible marketing, and sony fans to talk more then buy, shows why there great exclusives never seem to be or feel that big.

Lastly, the assumptions make you all look stupid..you cant say that microsoft would have to compensate bathesda for whatever the playstation version would sale… and if the fanboy in you all can drop, SONY also pays for exclusives….maybe not as much, but if any of you out there can read quarterly results and financial sheets, then you would know why.

      1) it’s Bethesda not Bathesda you fool
      2) It would be financial suicide; it would completely ruin Bethesda’s image with the playstation and PC community who are a huge part of their target audience – especially if the early signs that the PS4 is more popular than the XBOX One remain.
      3) Wouldn’t personally call Halo a blockbuster game – sells plenty copies but can’t exactly call it a blockbuster if it releases to a reduced audience.
      4) Some of Playstation’s exclusives are incredible – the uncharted series, infamous, god of war and now the last of us which could potentially be one of the greatest games of our generation if the hype is to be believed (and from playing the demo, it is)
      5) Yes Microsoft WOULD have to compensate Bethesda; they’re not just going to sell the game exclusively to Xbox to be nice – they are a business and they need to make a profit, only way to do that is to release the product to as many consumers as possible.
I hope you were trying to troll people with some of the stuff you wrote on here because as a multi platform gamer it saddens me when certain consoles get hate just because of imbecilic fan boys.

      • Dakan45

        another idiot.

        • Spaceman

An even bigger one…a PauperStation follower.

        • Dakan45

          no more like pauperstation hater.
So you get the idiot award.

      You’re a idiot.

    • Dakan45

welll, resistance 3 didnt even make it to 1 milion. So yeah 1 platform is never a good thing.

  • John Conner

I agree with article, as it needs to be both on PC and PS4, to stop financial suicide and treason of their original fanbase at the modding scene for Fallout New Vegas, Fallout 3 and the Elder Scrolls series which the only thing good other then the lore is the modding that is poosible, if there’s a PS4 port, there would be a PC port as Bethesda will never betray their PC fanbase.

  • Adam Lyons

I agree with the article, I would be extremely surprised (and angry) if Fallout went exclusively to just one console.

It’s possible. After all, Microsoft have historically paid to get access to Fallout DLCs about a month earlier than the Playstation. However permanent, exclusive access to the entire game (not just the DLCs) would cost a lot more money as Microsoft would effectively need to compensate Bethesda for every lost Playstation sale.

That’s not the only potential cost to Bethesda either. Bad sentiments from Playstation owners could harm Bethesda’s reputation and dent future sales of their other games.

So yes – possible, but very unlikely.

    Good article.

    • Kris

Countering the loss of potential Playstation sales would only cost Microsoft at most $300 million. That’s when taking into account the total sales for both FO3 and NV (6million combined)…so that estimated price tag for an exclusive deal may be a little high.

I don’t think it will happen, but with Microsoft’s deep pockets and willingness to pay, it is more possible than I’d like to admit.

  • Sam

It has already been announced that there will not be an early large price point for the PS4. Sony would not make the same mistake twice… hopefully.

  • Daniel Kunkle

FO4 needs at least a teaser at E3 for PC, PS4 and XBox One. Even if it’s late 2014 it needs to at least be announced IMO. Anything less and E3 this year is pretty much a nonevent as FO is one of my all time favorites.
