It wasn’t long after the McLaren MP4-12C was unveiled that the company knew that they went a little too conservative in terms of its design, and so it was obvious that this would be rectified with the P1. However, this car is rather costly, and so will not appeal to most drivers.
The Woking, England based company understands that they needed to come up with a more cost-effective vehicle, and so details of the McLaren P13 was born. For now this is just its internal name, but it shows that McLaren is committed to their road car business, but will it be more of a success than the MP4-12C, which we have to say was not the best name for their vehicle, as it sounded more like one of their F1 cars?
The McLaren P13 has some great aspirations – not only in terms of its price, but also from the engine and its main competition. Take the McLaren P13 price for example, which is expected to be in the region of £120,000. This will be more than £40,000 cheaper than the 12C, and as so will make it far more appealing to a wider audience.
You would imagine that McLaren would have to cut corners when it comes to the technology used in the newer car because of its cheaper price, but this would not be the case, as the infrastructure is already there to use the latest technology, which it wasn’t for the 12C.
McLaren P13 engine vs. MP4-12C – Okay, so we know that there will need to be a few compromises in order to achieve that lower price, and so a detuned version of the 3.8-liter V-8 from the 12C will make a return. There had been a rumor to suggest a McLaren P13 Honda engine, considering the company has now signed a new deal to use their engines in their F1 cars from 2015, but this can be marked down as one of those highly unlikely rumors.
The Audi R8, Nissan GT-R, and finally the Porsche 911 Carrera S are expected to be the main rivals for the McLaren P13.
