Google Glass XE5 update with battery life tweaks

By Updated on

If you are lucky enough to already be in possession of a pair of Google Glasses via the Google Glass Explorer Program, we have some very good news for you. Google is currently in the stage of releasing the first official software update for the wearable tech, releasing the XE5 update which adds some improvements and brand new functionality to the glasses.

We told you at the start of the month, that one of the first ‘official’ reviews for the developer version, cited low battery life for Google Glass, as some of the main criticisms. Now, Google has perhaps taken the first steps to improve the situation, by bringing some battery life tweaks to the XE5 update.

More specifically, Google Glass will now be able to provide a “more reliable estimation of battery charge remaining”, according to the official change log. It means that when developers are busy taking photos, sharing media online and using the product generally, they will now be able to see more clearly when their device is going to die – rather than ‘unceremoniously shutting itself down’, as what the review also said happened prior to this update.

Aside from the battery life notification tweak, the Google Glass XE5 update will also allow users to comment and +1 posts on Google Plus. Google Glass will now bring up notifications for Hangouts and Google Plus updates as well, and offer the ability for developers to send off crash reports as well – a vital stage of the beta process.

You can read the full changelog here, the update should be rolling out right now OTA so many of you may have already received a notification to install the XE5 update. For everyone else, it is going to be a long wait until the public version is finally ready for release, towards the end of 2013.

If you have an Explorer version in your hands now, let us know your thoughts on the changes within XE5 – are you loving Google Glass or not?
