Sony PS4 arrival coincides with PS2 used-trade end

By Updated on

If you still have a Sony PS2 console and a vast collection of games that you are looking to sell, we have some important news for you. It has just been confirmed that as of June, US retailer GameStop will officially cease trading on all things PS2 – that includes consoles, games and accessories.

It means that if you are looking for a quick buck in exchange for some of your PS2 classics like Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty, you don’t have long at all to cash them in. A poster spotted in-store by a Reddit user, confirms that the cut-off date for one of America’s biggest used-games retailers is shutting down all PS2 trading on June 1, 2013.

With worldwide console production of the PS2, having officially ceased as of January 2013, this is no big surprise with all attention on Sony’s PS4 reveal the same month at E3 2013. We’re actually surprised that PS2 trades were still active up to this point, despite the fact that you’ll probably be receiving peanuts anyway from GameStop in relation to exchange rates.

With GameStop making the first move, don’t be surprised if other retailers in the US follow suit as well by stopping second-hand PS2 sales. You now have just under 30 days to decide whether it is worth cashing in on your PS2 collection, or keep your memories in tact by holding on to everything.

The PS2 still remains a very popular household console, especially since newer PS3 models don’t come with PS2 backwards compatibility, unlike the 60GB fat model at launch.

So there we have it. Let us know if you have a bounty of PS2 material in your home and whether you will now sell everything or keep it.
