FIFA 14 Wii U, next-gen release silence disappoints

By Updated on

As expected, EA officially announced FIFA 14 to the world yesterday, releasing some debut images of the game and confirming that the next title is due out on current-gen consoles sometime in September. The big talking point though is the fact that the Nintendo Wii U has again seemingly been ignored, while we didn’t get a confirmation of a Sony PS4 release either.

Having seen the first batch of screenshots released for the game, we have to say that we’re finding it a little hard to distinguish the true differences from FIFA 13. It largely looks like the same game and having seen some feedback, it looks like a lot of you feel the same way as well.

But let’s save that argument for another day. Why are EA continuing to ignore Nintendo’s lovely Wii U console? If it can handle Black Ops 2, surely it can handle the latest version of FIFA 14 along with Xbox 360 and PS3 versions as well, right? Unfortunately though, it looks like FIFA 14 is joining the new Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 on the sidelines with no word on if they will ever come out on Nintendo’s console.

There is still hope though, as EA has confirmed that ‘additional platforms’ for FIFA 14 will be announced at a later date. We are inclined to believe that this will refer to next-gen versions though, rather than a post-release port for the Wii U. We’ve spoke in the past about the lack of third-party games on the system and you have to say that this is another major blow for Nintendo.

Does EA have a real problem with Nintendo that we’re not aware of? Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 and FIFA 14 would have been dead certs for the Wii U you would have thought, but instead we’re again talking about what could have been. Hopefully EA will clarify the situation soon as right now there are a lot of angry Wii U owners who are wondering if they made the right decision picking up the console at launch.

As fantastic as Mario and Zelda are, the Wii U simply can’t survive on first-party games alone, not with the PS4 and next Xbox on the way. Give us your thoughts on this latest setback.
