If you are still disappointed over the fact that backwards compatibility will not be possible in disc-format on the upcoming PS4 system, we have some fresh information from an interview that took place over in Japan. Sony PS4 system architect Mark Cerny and Masayasu Ito from SCEI’s Engineering & Production Division have commented on the backwards compatibility issue, reiterating that the main problem is due to the PS3 Cell processor that powers the current generation of games on the system.
To remind you, backwards compatibility will be coming to the PS4, but only with select titles and via a cloud-streaming service from Gaikai which consumers will likely have to pay an extra fee to utilize. Backwards compatibility remains a feature that is still highly regarded and Sony’s Cerny and Ito have said recently that they ‘had to think long and hard’ before ultimately deciding against it.

When speaking with AV Watch and translated here over Neogaf, Ito has said that the Cell processor would need to be equipped inside the PS4 as well as the new x86 architecture for it to happen. However as most of you are well aware, the Cell processor was and still is difficult to develop for according to many developers, which is why we see a system now that removes the Cell chip completely and with it – backwards compatibility for PS3 Blu-Ray discs.
Ito has confirmed a few key points in that the Cell processor that makes backwards compatibility possible isn’t available for emulation purposes on the PS4. He also reveals that they could still ‘freely’ manufacture the Cell processor again if it is needed in the future. As it stands at the moment though, Sony are looking at other avenues to make backwards compatibility ‘sustainable’.
