We have seen eSports arrive in console gaming with Black Ops 2, but now we have new rumors this week suggesting that the possibility of competitive gaming within Battlefield and specifically Battlefield 4 could be a real possibility. Professional tournaments in a Battlefield environment is certainly an adventurous project, but it’s great that DICE now seem to be considering it for the future.
Will it be ready in time for the Battlefield 4 release though, which has apparently been leaked by Microsoft as October 29 2013? DICE general manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson has spoken in a recent interview about eSports, revealing that the team are ‘very interested’ in including it into Battlefield 4.
Judging by the tone of his comments, it seems as if it could have been a surprise intended for E3 2013, as Troedsson also said that they are ‘not announcing anything’ at the moment. We remember heading down to the Expogamer Expo in London prior to Black Ops 2’s release, and seeing just how exciting a live match could be at first hand.
Two teams battling it out with live commentary from one of Treyarch’s staff on the microphone. It was a fantastic experience and although Call of Duty is geared towards an arcade style of play, it will be interesting to see if DICE can pull off competitive matches in a more tactical based environment.
There’s also the Battlefield gameplay style as well, which may cause a few issues when playing in an eSports tournament. Having said that, DICE wouldn’t just say they are very interested without putting the effort and research in to make sure it would work, first.
How good are you at Battlefield games? Would you consider entering into a league if DICE could pull it off?
