While anticipation on GTA V is naturally sky high at the moment as we approach the game’s release in September, we do have a word of warning to bring to those who are prone to ‘clicking’ on potential free offers as you see them. In this case, we have evidence of a GTA V beta scam that is currently in circulation, attempting to dupe unassuming gamers into downloading a piece of software in return for a beta that hasn’t even been made official by Rockstar.
You’re probably reading this and thinking – who actually falls for this rubbish? While we most definitely agree on that part, you’ll be amazed just how many people do fall for it without realizing, only to find out it’s too late when the scammer has managed to install a piece of dangerous software on the victim’s PC.
The bad news is that there are several GTA V beta scams that are going around at the moment, but the good news is that Rockstar are already on the case. This report by Fusible suggests that the developer has already managed to shut down one or two offenders, but there are still some beta scams online which are still a rampant threat.
One of these is ‘gta5betacode.com’. This is a fully fledged website that has been set up and asks users to ‘share’ their Facebook page, share off a dubious message to 5 other gaming pages and then finally ‘like’ their Facebook page. Doing these steps will then prompt you to select a console for the beta and the site will then try to set you up with a fake beta installation.
It’s amazing how many of these sites get away with it, and you only have to go to Facebook and type ‘GTA V beta’ to see that there are many others trying the exact same thing. We’re glad Rockstar and Take-Two are already on the case though and those naughty scammers should be receiving legal action at the same time.
GTA V is arriving in September, but we doubt there will be any kind of multiplayer beta before the game is out. Let us know if you have fallen for such a scam in the past, or whether you know friends who have.
