We have some interesting news to share with you now as we approach the end of another week, and it is likely to put a smile on your face again as GTA V related news often does. As most of you are aware, GTA V is fast approaching and has been in development for a good number of years. We don’t see annual releases of the franchise like we see with Call of Duty, and Take Two has explained recently that they have no intention of joining the annual trend in the near future either.
It’s fair to say that the jury is still out on whether having annual Call of Duty releases is a good thing or not. Some say it has gone downhill with the frequent releases, while others still can’t get enough of Call of Duty. The game still sells at the end of the day, but reputation among the community is still a key factor of course.
Take Two’s Chief Operating Officer Karl Slatoff has revealed in an interesting interview with GameSpot why they don’t agree with the annual releases and certainly won’t be adopting it with their most popular franchise in GTA. He has said that every time a new GTA game comes out it is a brand new experience and an experience that simply can’t be achieved in two years.
If they decided to do annual releases though, he had this to say which is easily the key area of interest to take into account:
“And if we did that, our product would fatigue and the franchise would degrade from a value perspective.”
That essentially means that Take Two values quality over quantity and although they could make unprecedented amounts of money like Activision and EA if they released games annually – they just don’t want to do it as a principle. Who can argue with them as well – the Grand Theft Auto franchise is arguably the most popular video game franchise of all time and so why should they start getting greedy if they have a magic formula at the moment?
We certainly don’t mind waiting another 5 years if that is how long it’s going to take for GTA 6 to come out on next-gen consoles. Let us know your thoughts on Take Two’s comments above. Do you think the likes of Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty are in decline due to annual releases or not?
