BlackBerry Z10 sales in Canada reveal platform migration

When BlackBerry informed us last month that they have seen record sales for the Z10 they never offered any sales figures to back this claim up, which is why some of us assumed that this was just a marketing tactic to build up hype. However, it seems as though there could be some truth because many consumers with an iPhone and a Samsung smartphone has decided that the first BB10 device is for them.

Sales figures for the BlackBerry Z10 are still estimates, with sales as much as half a million for February alone and 4 million in all for Q1 of 2014. This is a pretty high target to achieve and it will be interesting to see what happens once the US get their hands on the Z10, which could be as early as March 15.

A recent report suggests that half of phone sales in Canada are currently for the Z10, while a third of UK phone sales are for the new BB10 smartphone. If this news is correct then BlackBerry might be able to rest a little easier knowing that they are on to a winner with the Z10.

Just the idea that the BlackBerry Z10 is outselling the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 is a huge deal, even though these handsets are getting on a little. However, the Canadian phone maker should not get complacent because we know that Samsung are about to unveil the Galaxy S4.

Going back to those projected sales figures; many analysts are already starting to revise their forecasts, as they are still not convinced that the Z10 will sell as many units as hoped, which does add to the confusion.

However, we can see where some of the confusion has come from, because the report suggesting that the Z10 accounts for half the phones sold in Canada seems to have come from a mobile phone reseller and not from one of their major carriers.

What do you believe? While we have no proof that the BlackBerry Z10 is outselling the Galaxy S3 or the iPhone 5, there is no reason to doubt it at this time, although we can’t help feel that it is a little far-fetched.
