Sony PS4 cross-game chat an integrated feature

One of the most requested features of the PS3 that didn’t happen, was cross game chat support across all PS3 titles as a built in feature. Sony angered a lot of PS3 users in the process considering that the feature was available on the Xbox 360, but at last it looks like Sony will finally be delivering on cross-game chat when the next-generation PS4 console arrives at the end of 2013.

Cross-game chat should have been inside the PS3, even as a PS-Plus only exclusive. Apparent hardware restraints meant that this was a problem though and this was highlighted when Sony released their PS Vita handheld, with cross-game chat support via the Party application straight from launch.

It’s obviously a case of better late than never though, as you’ll be pleased to hear that an official Sony press release has confirmed that cross-game party chat will be available on the Sony PS4 at launch. The company didn’t make a big deal about this at their February 20 event in New York, but at least now gamers will be able to have a feature that will enable them to chat with friends in and out of games as they please.

On top of this, don’t forget that Sony are also including headsets with every console, so it looks like there is really going to be a heavy emphasis on building a community this time around, along with the share button that will enable all new types of social sharing on various spaces.

One thing we are wondering about is whether the PS4 cross-game chat will operate exactly the same way the PS Vita does with the Party app, or if it will be a brand new system entirely. The ability to spectate your friends’ games will be an exciting feature for sure, especially if you can just pop on and talk to them in-game if he or is is having difficulty on a specific area of a game.

You can see the PS4 confirmation of cross-game chat at Sony’s press release here, under the Shared Game Experiences category. Let us know your thoughts on this confirmed feature and your ideas on why Sony didn’t show this off at their initial event. Let’s hope we see it in action live at E3 2013 in June.
