This could be the big one everyone. Sony has sent out a statement announcing that they will be holding a press event on February 20 to discuss the future of the PlayStation. PlayStation Meeting 2011 unveiled the PS Vita to the world, so is this going to be the moment when we finally get to witness the birth of the Sony PS4 after months of speculation?
Sony has previously hinted that they don’t want to be last to the new console unveilings again, so could they be putting their plan into action with a surprise reveal this month? Up until this point, everyone has expected to see the PS4 unveiled at E3 2013, or close to that period – but how many expected a possible unveil in February?
Sony has already created a teaser website and video in preparation for the event, confirming that proceedings will start at 6PM Eastern Time on Wednesday. That is 3PM for those of you on Pacific Time, 11pm for everyone in the UK and 7am or 8am for those of you tuning in from Hong Kong and Japan respectively.
We expect Sony CEO Kaz Hirai to be spearheading the event once again just as he did with the NGP reveal and we’re trying to think of ideas other than the PS4 if they are not planning to show the console at the event – we can’t think of any. It could be a very smart move to announce the PS4 months ahead of E3 and we’re praying that a February announcement could mean an end of 2013 release, not pushed into 2014 as some rumors claim.
Don’t forget though that Kaz Hirai recently said that they were reluctant to announce first so that competitors don’t come up with something better after having looked at their specifications. If they really are planning to drop the PS4 on February 20 then they must be fairly confident that their hardware specs won’t be topped by Microsoft.
What are your thoughts the event on February 20 – do you think this is the moment when we’ll finally see the Sony PS4?
