Many consumers are expecting Samsung to announce the long awaited Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 3 as the first two products that will spearhead the company’s push to be one of the dominant forces in the mobile industry this year. While the Galaxy S4 is thought to be close to an announcement, it looks like the Galaxy Note 3 may have to wait, with rumors suggesting that Samsung will instead announce an 8-inch version of the Note range to take on the Apple iPad Mini.
As most of you are aware, the iPad Mini sits at 7.9 inches and has been available to buy since November 2012. However, the device has come under considerable criticism over its lack of Retina Display screen like the iPad 4 and iPhone 5, and Samsung may now look to prize some of Apple’s fans over to their family with the introduction of a tablet called the Galaxy Note 8.0.
The guys over at SamMobile have said that this will be the confirmed name of their 8-inch Note and that it will be announced during Samsung’s press event at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this year, which will take place at the end of February, with the Korean manufacturer already confirmed to be in attendance.
Along with the name leak, SamMobile has also listed what specs the device will have, although there is no confirmation on what processor will be used yet. General specs include a 1280×800 TFT Super LCD display, a 5 megapixel rear camera, 2GB of RAM, 16 or 32GB internal storage and support for MicroSD slot.
There’s also a USB 2.0 port, and a pleasing 4600mAh battery which should provide excellent battery life throughout the day. The Galaxy Note 8.0 will come in WiFi and 3G configurations and will be equipped with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out of the box. Most of you will agree with us in saying that the hardware specifications are not that impressive.
No processor is listed yet, but judging by the specs seen so far, we highly doubt that Samsung will opt to put their latest Exynos 5 Octa processor inside – it should still be quad-core based though. A potential word of warning however, as the Note 8.0 is thought to be attached to a $400 price point.
We think that is a bit expensive for the specs on offer – what do you think? Hopefully we’ll also get a Galaxy S4 announcement at the same time to provide us with some options.
