A few years ago Google and Motorola had a great relationship with the start of the Droid range of smartphones, but with the arrival of the Nexus brand things have gone a little quiet. We had assumed that since the acquisition last May the two would team up and bring a completely new handset, but so far we haven’t heard a thing. However, news has come to light that a new Motorola X flagship phone could be revealed at Google I/O 2013 with Android 5.0.
Okay, so this will not be a Droid handset like we have seen a few years back, but this could be the next Nexus phone (although this is expected to be the LG Nexus 5) and could run Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. However, a Droid Forums member has suggested that the Motorola X will not be a normal Android handset and not a Nexus one. If this is true then it has certainly added even more confusion to the saga of Motorola’s next smartphone.
It’s also been suggested that the Motorola X will be released on multiple carriers in the US and not just the one as in the past, which would help those all-important sales figures. If Google do make the announcement in May during I/O then we expect the release of the device shortly after. However, the Motorola X could have an issue because May is when the Samsung Galaxy S4 is expected to be released, and if we are to go by the release of its predecessor then the S4 could very well be the best selling Android smartphone, giving Motorola a bit of a headache.
However, this could be the start of a new brand for Motorola, which they could start to build a new business around. First there could be the Motorola X smartphone, which could be followed by the Motorola X tablet?
