We have some more fallout from the disappointing news about the ongoing closure of HMV stores now, as it looks like one individual has taken matters into his own hands after hearing the news about HMV gift cards now being rejected by stores, angering thousands of consumers who obtained one over the Christmas period.
As it stands, many HMV stores are continuing to trade in the UK, but unbelievably gift vouchers are being rejected by store staff despite only being purchased weeks ago. As a result, we have the story of one man to tell you about now, who decided to walk away with three games out of a store, as staff refused to accept his gift voucher payment.
As a result of his actions, security staff attempted to follow him before he got away, but to no avail. Now we see this case hitting the newspapers and it could force HMV to start paying out on their gift vouchers, regardless of their financial position. While you could argue the man has committed a criminal offense by walking out of the store, but then again the voucher should have been accepted in the first place.
The repercussions of this is now likely to mean that other consumers will refuse to budge if their gift vouchers are not accepted, and there has already been cases where the police have had to be called in to settle disputes. If a buyer is found for HMV, then we could see the situation change where gift cards will be honored. As it stands though, HMV are apparently ‘legally’ in the clear to reject gift cards while they are in administration.
Not all of the HMV stores are in trouble though, as we can confirm that HMV Hong Kong is still open for business and accepting gift cards from consumers. Let us know if you have had your gift card rejected this week and if you are also tempted to walk out of the store like this man.
