After finally providing customers with the long awaited Samsung Galaxy Note 2 on their network, focus has now switched to what will be Verizon’s first smartphone release of 2013. CES 2013 was a bit of a disappointment in terms of new Verizon product reveals, but we do have some exciting information for you now, particularly those who enjoy new smartphones with a physical QWERTY keyboard.

Physical keyboard and Verizon can usually only mean one thing, that a new Samsung Stratosphere phone may be on the way as the first Verizon phone released in 2013. The Stratosphere 2 was only released in November 2012 however, so it does seem a little odd if they are already planning a follow up straight away.

New benchmark tests have been uncovered, revealing a device with a codename of Godiva and a model number of SCH-i425. It’s worth noting that the Stratosphere name hasn’t been mentioned in the benchmark test here, but the Stratosphere 2 did have an official model number of i415 and the original device a model number of i405 before it – so it is looking likely.

Further information uncovered in the benchmark suggests that the Samsung Stratosphere 3 will have a 720p display and a dual-core based Snapdragon S4 processor. There’s also some line of text revealing that Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean is likely to be the software installed out of the box – an instant improvement on the Stratosphere 2 which shipped with Ice Cream Sandwich.

The big question is though, is whether there is still demand for Verizon smartphones with a physical QWERTY keyboard attached to them. It’s a well known fact that RIM is preparing to unleash a legion of BlackBerry 10 based devices throughout the year and Verizon has already confirmed that they’ll be carrying some of the devices as well.

RIM are the masters of the physical QWERTY as we all know, so would a Samsung Stratosphere release be in danger of being pushed to the side? Hopefully we’ll hear some more details on this elusive device soon, but it looks like a third Stratosphere phone is in the works – give us your reaction to the news.
