Nexus 4 with Android 4.2.2 discovered

By Updated on

While many Android owners are waiting for the next major version of Android to arrive, which if popular rumor is true will be called Key Lime Pie, it appears that another minor version of Google’s mobile operating system may be arriving before 5.0. Android 4.2.2 has been spotted running on new Nexus 4 shipments in South America, although there’s already a legion of consumers who think that it may be a hoax.

Nexus 4 shipments in US and Europe continue to be a cause of major frustration for consumers, but it looks that some select few in Brazil and Malaysia are lucky enough to be having no such problems getting hold of an elusive Nexus 4.

On top of that, imagine their surprise when they booted up their device for the first time to discover that the system software on board was in fact Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, not Android 4.2.1. Jelly Bean 4.2.1 is the latest ‘official’ version of the software at the moment and there has been no prior hints that Android 4.2.2 was nearing a release – leading to calls that the screenshot you see above is a fake and the work of a photoshop artist.

Of course, it isn’t hard to replace a digit to make it look as if a new version has been discovered, but it is worth pointing out that the source of the information came from two South American websites around the same period. At the moment, it is unclear what changes Android 4.2.2 brings to the table if confirmed to be true, so hopefully Google will clear up the confusion this week with a statement to set the record straight.

We all want Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie to come out as soon as possible, but don’t be surprised if you see a Android 4.2.2 notification pop up in the meantime. It could just turn out to be a bug fixing update with no new features added. We’ll update you when we know more.
