It had been Steve Jobs vision that brought Apple back from the dead years ago, and while some of his views were not agreed on by all at Apple and analysts, you can’t help but admire what Steve Jobs achieved in his lifetime. There were some things that Steve Jobs believed in strongly, although it now seems that Apple might be moving away from a few of these core beliefs.
The 7-inch iPad never happened while Steve Jobs had been alive and while we can’t be sure how much Jobs knew about the eventuality of an iPad mini, we do remember a few statements Jobs made about the need for a tablet in this size. After we’ve spent many hours hands-on with the 7.9-inch iPad mini, in our opinion, the smaller tablet had been a good idea considering how light the device is at only 2 inches smaller.
Steve Jobs on the Stylus – It had also been made very clear over the years that a Stylus is a bad idea, which Apple’s man made it very clear why you wouldn’t need such an input device. We’ve embedded a couple of old videos below this article that include Steve Jobs in an interview, and also a remix of comments Steve Jobs made on stage about the Stylus.
These videos give us a quick reminder about his feelings towards the Stylus. Take a look if you need to refresh your memory, but also remember that the industry has changed a lot since Steve Jobs made these comments.
We’ve seen massive success with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 that includes a Stylus, and a number of other gadgets are starting to use the Stylus again. It is fair to say the new types of Stylus are designed with a twist, and include advancements in technology and software support.
Apple employees file Stylus patent – this page on the official US patent website reveals a patent submitted by two Apple employees. Engineers David Simon and Jonah Harley filed this patent towards the end of 2011, which the above link details in full. The exact circumstances of this filing are not known, but we do know that having engineers submit a patent has helped Apple keep ideas under the radar until closer to release.
You can read an abstract below from the patent filing, which is titled “ACTIVE STYLUS“. Have a read and let us know what you think in the comments.
Do you think it would be a good idea for Apple to use a Stylus with future products? This might not have been a vision from Steve Jobs, but would you be happy to see a future iPhone or iPad include an Apple Stylus? You can read a breakdown about this patent application here, or some recent rumors about A7 processors and the iPad 5 / mini 2 in this article.
