To many consumers it came as a huge shock that the first-generation iPad mini lacked a feature that has made some of Apple’s other devices outstanding, and that’s a Retina display. It will come as no surprise that most of those who purchased the smaller iPad will be wondering if the Retina display will make it onto the second-generation model, but if it did we have to warn that the iPad mini 2 price might determine what features will be included.
Over the years Apple always advances their devices, but not as much as we ever hope, the iPhone is a fine example of this. While it’s easy to assume that Apple will go ahead and include the Retina display in the next iPad mini, you have to remember that there’s more to it than just throwing the technology in there. The reason for this is because the display is that much smaller than its larger sibling and getting the resolution correct is a tough job, and we know that resolving this issue will cost more money in R&D.
Apple have always tried not to increase the price of new versions of their products, and a perfect way for them to do this is to reign in some of the features that you and I would like to see included in new models. While we would like to say that Apple would include a Retina display in the iPad mini 2, we have to accept that it might not happen – although it is highly likely.
How much is the iPad mini 2 likely to cost? The safe bet would be to say the same as the current version, but if Apple were to include a Retina display then a more powerful CPU and graphics chip would need to be used, which we know will come at an expense. Apple has a tough job ahead because getting the price and iPad mini 2 specs right is going to be a fine balancing act, but Apple have been there before, but they don’t get it right all the time. We’re not even sure when the iPad mini 2 release date will be, but there have been rumors to suggest that the iPad 5 could be released as early as March 2013, so could Apple be planning the same thing with the update to the smaller iPad?
