Nexus 4 permanently sold out for 2012

By Posted 3 Dec 2012, 20:42

The LG Nexus 4 is now permanently sold out for the rest of 2012, which in the UK leaves both the 8GB and 16GB unavailable to order at Google play. In the US you can still order the 16GB Nexus 4 with a wait that takes you into next year, although the 8GB model currently has the sold out sign showing. If you hoped to get the Nexus 4 direct from Google this year you’re out of luck, which means the best chance you have would be an auction website like eBay. Sadly the Nexus 4 price on eBay is much higher thanks to opportunists.

Each time Google managed to get Nexus 4 stock for both the UK and US it went within minutes, which has left some people confused whether this is a Google problem or just massive demand that is impossible to meet. Some fans state on blogs and forums that they don’t expect the 8GB Nexus 4 sold out message to be removed for at least a month, and at the very least they don’t expect to see the smartphone delivered for around 3 months if they haven’t placed an order yet. If you did manage to place an order for the 16GB Nexus 4 then you are looking at around a 2-month wait before the smartphone delivers, which would be for orders placed today in the US.

The Nexus 4 price rip-off – you should be warned that while it isn’t impossible to find the handset, you need to understand the real Nexus 4 price before placing orders at some 3rd parties. Some people are not aware that the Nexus 4 sells from just under $300 on the Google play store, and then head to 3rd party retailers with some prices reaching from $550 to $700 depending on the model you choose.

Would you pay these premium prices for the Nexus 4 to get the handset before Christmas? These prices are ridiculous and hiked up thanks to the demand, although we are aware that some people are parting with $700 for the 16GB Nexus 4 at certain online retailers. It seems really crazy to us, but we guess some people are really desperate to get hands-on in 2012 rather than after Christmas. You might want to see our article from earlier today that touched on freebies available for the Nexus 4, 7, and 10 directly from Google.

By the time stock is available new handsets with next gen CPU will
    Be coming GS4 Cortex A15 CPU !
    Google fail…….

    • Kboy

As long as its an android phone that makes the sales then Google win. But Nexus 4 has disappointed me big time. Might as well stick with the galaxy nexus then get the SGS4 around Feb/March 2013.

Well I’m all for budget phones so what are the chances that once A15 phones come out the Nexus 4 will be discounted?

  • rkl

OK, what’s the official source for the “permanently sold out for 2012″ headline? I don’t see one quoted in the article, except for the dubious “some fans state on blogs and forums…” source, which is hardly reliable.

    • RickyT

It is a simple matter of maths, you do know it is Dec 3rd right? You won’t see the Nexus 4 back in stock this year.

      • Des Smith

        It was in stock at 17:00 GMT today (4/12/12). 16GB limited to 1, 8GB limited to 2 per buyer. I got a 16GB arrives in 1-2 weeks…

        • veggieman

Me too, although the email confirmation from Google says delivery in 2-4 days!

        • Des Smith

woah Sweet! I hope they do the same with me!

  • Rob

Gutted. Not sure whether to believe the headline, but I’m in the UK and we’re clearly having to play second fiddle to the US, so it looks like I’m going to have to buy a Nexus 4 from Carphone Warehouse, at £389, which is £110 more than the Nexus 4 on Play. Or rather, it would be if you could get your hands on it. Want to trade in my 3GS while it’s still worth something, too.

    • Ivan

I am going to buy it from CPW as well due to these issues With stock. But on the bright side it isn’t £110 difference when you factor in shipping and tax. Probably about £50-60 if the price on Google play is without VAT.

      • matt

UK play store price includes VAT. £9.99 Shipping. I know… I got one :-)

        • Michael

I wish it’s back in Stock in Play Store in UK for my Birthday on January 15th

      • Kieran M

Don’t buy from CPW. Actually entertaining their BS prices makes them think they can get away with it next time. Don’t fall for bad marketing and exclusivity rights won’t be profitable for retailers to buy in future

  • Justin Barnet

Screw it then… I am going to miss the updates on the nexus. But I might as well wait for the Galaxy S4 now. I was a bit annoyed at only having 16gb storage any way… just have to live with the galaxy nexus for a bit longer. I think the S4 will be a kick ass phone for sure.

    • tom

I agree but you have to wait for update from Samsung – which take forever – in Australia – we haven’t even received an update fro 4.1 yet :(

  • sdf

This obviously isn’t correct, the nexus 4 is available in Canada right now and people are saying they have just ordered 1-2 week shipping

    • http://twitter.com/imtiax_ Imtiaz

Yeah but if you check it now it will say 7 – 8 weeks. I coudln’t order it from school when it said 1 – 2 weeks, I just got home and its 7 – 8 weeks. I’m not buying it any more. :(

  • Jazz

Live in Canada and got a 16GB one on Dec.3 but have to wait 7-8 weeks for shipping tho =(

    • michael

      aww, u a male?

  • http://twitter.com/badoe101 Brian Doe

It was only offered on Play store in limited numbers as bait. They are betting on you all taking the bait and paying the higher price.( Sprat to catch a mackerel)

Bad artical is bad… it’s pretty premature to write this until half way through december, I’ll admit it’s not looking hopeful for before Christmas but the fact some third parties are getting stock on the 13th it does suggest the store will to, I wouldn’t hav much faith in it except if the Canadian store got restocked then I wouldn’t be supprised the UK and Australian stores don’t get a small amount in also

  • smadger

Dear Daniel Chubb – this is s disgustingly bad written article and you should be ashamed of yourself. Where are the independent sources, quotes, facts and figures?!?!? Have you even taken the time to research your story as any student of journalism at the most basic level is told? You clearly do not know what you are talking about, and are taking heresay and rumour as fact.

I HAVE contacted Google, and I HAVE researched before jumping to conclusions. Google have an exclusivity contract with Carphone Warehouse that runs up until December 13th. Not even Google themselves would sell the Nexus if there was stock available as there is now an agreement between themselves, CW and LG. I have spoken to Google representatives, and customer service people and been told exactly the same thing. The Nexus 4 will be back in stock and on sale in the UK after this.

If you’re looking for page hits, lying and bad journalism is not the way to go – have you not been keeping up with the Leveson Inquiry???

Guys, if you want a Nexus 4 ignore the fool who wrote this and either go to Carphone Warehouse and pay a little more, wait until the 13th / 14th when the exclusivity agreement ends and get one from the play store, or possibly any network provider as the agreement between LG/G/CW will have ended.

  • anon

Back in stock today at 5pm…

    • anon

Looks like there was a limited amount of stack available for delivery immediately as my order got through and says shipping in 2 days. If I check back now they’re still taking orders, but with a wait. Even so it should still be before Christmas.

      What a ridiculously bad article!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Canuck

Wrong info……available today in UK @ 5 GMT.

Do some research before posting article. I know it sells. But wrong info? That’s low.

  • Des Smith

Quite a poor article, you can’t make claims like this, unless you have your sources. That’s basic journalism.

  • Fred

pffft! Back in stock, ordered. #sensationalised article

  • TechGuy

I just bought one (16GB) from Google Play for delivery in 3-5 working days and someone else I know placed an order around half an hour later for delivery in 1-2 weeks – still in time for Christmas. This article needs updating as its premise is patently wrong!

  • http://www.markwheadon.com/ Mark Wheadon

So “permanently sold out” that it went on sale again in the UK today :-) Mine is claimed to be arriving within “1 to 2 weeks” — cool.

  • RIgs

Back in stock in UK at 5pm today, ordered mine. This article was very inaccurate :L

  • Ha

Love how the baseless headline for thi article has already proved wrong with the N4 going back on sale today and some of them were at 1-2 weeks shipping

  • http://twitter.com/DenizOmer Deniz Omer

This article is a lie. On Monday it said the Nexus 4 was permanently sold out: “The LG Nexus 4 is now permanently sold out for the rest of 2012, which in the UK leaves both the 8GB and 16GB unavailable to order at Google play” yet only 24 hours later it was available for purchase. I bought mine yesterday and expect it to be delivered in the next few weeks. Won’t be coming to this site anymore either.
