Most brands have a massive opportunity to move a lot of products during the busy holiday shopping season, although if the brand cannot keep stock then they will lose sales. This has been the case with Google and their Asus Nexus 7 and LG Nexus 4, which have both had stock problems in this busy part of the year. It is fair to say that demand is very high for both the Nexus 4 smartphone and Nexus 7 tablet, but it still means a lot of lost opportunity and frustrated shoppers.
The good news is that the 32GB Nexus 7 with 3G has returned to the UK, although rather than the normal in stock message, this version of the Nexus 7 states “Ships Soon” with a 1 – 2 week wait. The 32GB and 16GB Nexus 7 with Wi-Fi are in stock and ready to shop right away. Sadly US shoppers still have the “Coming Soon” message for the 32GB Nexus 7 with mobile data and Wi-Fi, and Google hasn’t stated when this version of the tablet will arrive back in stock for the US.
Google’s Nexus 4 seems to be the smartphone most people want, which is still out of stock on the official play store in both the US and UK. Google’s telling people to check back soon on their store, and this is exactly what most people are doing. One PR reader said “I check the store multiple times a day seeing the same out of stock message, this is getting me more frustrated every time. There’s no way to pre-order and also no means of being notified when a Nexus 4 becomes available“.
Will you order the Nexus 7, or Nexus 4, when stock returns for the model you want? It is worth pointing out that when stock returns it will definitely be limited, so get orders in early if you really want the smartphone or tablet. You can read about the Nexus 7 being on offer yesterday for Cyber Monday here, although feel free to share details about any bargains you managed to find over the weekend.
Bottom-line: It seems Google seriously underestimated demand for some of their products, especially the Nexus 4, although do you think it makes the smartphone more desirable?
