With Samsung and Apple seemingly dominating the smartphone market at the moment, it is up to the likes of Motorola, HTC and Sony to come up with new and fresh ideas to prise away some of the limelight from their rivals. HTC look like they are on to a winner with the HTC Droid DNA, while Sony could be planning to spring a major surprise at next year’s CES 2013 expo with a new flagship handset of their own.
Sony has been working hard on a new Xperia branded smartphone, which they hope will revitalize the company’s efforts and give consumers a viable alternative to the leading smartphones on the market at the moment – those being the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2 and Apple iPhone 5.
If you didn’t already know it, Sony definitely has a new model coming which will be unveiled at CES 2013 in January. A new interview in a German publication even has Sony Mobile CVP Sales & Marketing Dennis van Schie publicly express his belief that that this unannounced handset will have the requirements to suitably tackle the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 – a statement which confirms Sony’s clear targets when their new Xperia handset arrives.
Although it won’t be revealed until CES in January, the handset that they are talking about could end up as the Sony Yuga, which we spoke about briefly in an earlier article this week here. Early rumors suggest that the Sony Yuga could indeed be a force to be reckoned with as Sony implies, with impressive specs such as a 5-inch 1080p display, a 12 megapixel rear camera and Android Jelly Bean as just some of the core features.
[Is this the rumored Yuga?]
A large display form factor seems to be a popular choice at the moment, with Samsung’s Galaxy Note series clearly kicking off the trend. The Droid DNA is thought to have a 1080p 5-inch display as well, which does pose an interesting thought on whether Apple will again give in to requests to make their next iPhone even bigger.
The question that we want to engage though, is whether Sony has enough brand power to make you convinced that the Xperia lineup can still mix it up with the big boys. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is also on the horizon don’t forget and could be another secret contender for a CES 2013 reveal, with initial mouth-watering specs to blow you away.
If Sony bring a new flagship Xperia to CES with a 5-inch 1080p display, a 12MP camera and Jelly Bean – would you be interested or not? Have they lost too much ground in a way that it is now all about future devices from Samsung and Apple only?
