Now that Nintendo has finally announced official release and pricing information for the Wii U console over in the UK, we are already seeing evidence of the inevitable pricing wars that will kick off between retailers and supermarkets.
US consumers may get the more better deals on a long term basis with exclusive DLC content, but the UK has now become something of boom for supermarkets undercutting retailers to give extremely low prices for consumers looking for a bargain. We see it all the time with the annual releases of FIFA and Call of Duty and now it looks like the same trend may continue for Nintendo’s Wii U console as well.
The great thing to note is that Nintendo hasn’t set a recommended retail price for the Wii U, which means that it is entirely up to the retailer whether they want to stick to Nintendo’s official pricing for the US version, or lower their prices in order to beat off competition.
As a result, it’s a win win for the consumer as you can just bide your time as retailers and supermarkets go to war to offer you the best possible price before release. Considering that we still have over two months to go until release, supermarkets are yet to display their ‘extreme price cuts’ for the Wii U console and software, although there has already been considerable movement via online websites.
The highest price we’ve seen so far for the Basic version comes from the UK chain of GameStop where they have priced the console at £299.97 – we doubt that price is going to stick though. However, you’ll find much lower prices for the same package elsewhere though, such as at Tesco for £249.99 and even lower at Zavvi for £229.99 – which appears to be the best price at the moment.
Zavvi are also leading the way for the Premium version pricing too, with an asking price of £279.99, compared to GAME who sell the same package for £309.99 – still no lessons learnt there then. It’s well worth spending some time to check out the price comparisons on all the leading retailers online, but whatever you do – don’t order anything yet as the prices are guaranteed to drop closer to release.
Is Zavvi the best you have seen at the moment as well, or have you spotted another retailer offering an even lower price?
