Working out how to start some of the basic Skyrim Hearthfire tasks has been met with confusion, which would be for a number of reasons and in many cases is due to a lack of information on how to get started when building a house. One of the best ways to progress much faster in the Skyrim Hearthfire DLC is to hire a steward, and while this will cost you some gold, we found him/her extremely valuable when it comes to saving time.
How to hire a steward in Skyrim Hearthfire – If you want one of the best ways to collect different things needed for building your house, then you need a steward and they will collect stone, clay, lumber, and more. This is of course after you purchased land from a Jarl, and when you have you’ll only need a friend that can become your steward.

Before you can hire a steward you will need to build a basic house with one bedroom, which is easy considering the materials to do so are found inside a chest near your new plot of land. These can then be worked with on the Carpenter and Drafting tables. Once you create this basic building you only need to go and see one of your friends, or find a new follower that can become your steward.
We’ve embedded a video below that shows you the hiring of a steward in Skyrim Hearthfire, which is a very basic example. You only need to do the above and find a follower, although it’s very clear from our earlier article on how to start the Skyrim Hearthfire DLC that a lot of gamers are running into problems.
Problems with Skyrim Hearthfire – we’ve had no problems getting started with the new DLC although that hasn’t meant everyone’s experience is problem free, and in fact we’ve heard from a lot of our readers in regard to issues not only getting started, but also with different elements of building the house. Some players are installing Skyrim Hearthfire multiple times and can’t find the courier when entering a town, or any information on the Jarl, etc. We’ve also heard from a number of people that have seen their steward die, and then they couldn’t get a new one after that occurred.
Have you been playing Skyrim Hearthfire, and if so how has your house building been going in the second official DLC? Some PS3 and PC owners will be wishing they had an Xbox 360 right now, especially for PS3 players that lack Dawnguard with no sign of a launch.
