Skyrim Hearthfire: Hire a steward in DLC

By Posted 5 Sep 2012, 22:47

Working out how to start some of the basic Skyrim Hearthfire tasks has been met with confusion, which would be for a number of reasons and in many cases is due to a lack of information on how to get started when building a house. One of the best ways to progress much faster in the Skyrim Hearthfire DLC is to hire a steward, and while this will cost you some gold, we found him/her extremely valuable when it comes to saving time.

Skyrim Hearthfire: Hire a steward in DLC

How to hire a steward in Skyrim Hearthfire – If you want one of the best ways to collect different things needed for building your house, then you need a steward and they will collect stone, clay, lumber, and more. This is of course after you purchased land from a Jarl, and when you have you’ll only need a friend that can become your steward.

Before you can hire a steward you will need to build a basic house with one bedroom, which is easy considering the materials to do so are found inside a chest near your new plot of land. These can then be worked with on the Carpenter and Drafting tables. Once you create this basic building you only need to go and see one of your friends, or find a new follower that can become your steward.

We’ve embedded a video below that shows you the hiring of a steward in Skyrim Hearthfire, which is a very basic example. You only need to do the above and find a follower, although it’s very clear from our earlier article on how to start the Skyrim Hearthfire DLC that a lot of gamers are running into problems.

Problems with Skyrim Hearthfire – we’ve had no problems getting started with the new DLC although that hasn’t meant everyone’s experience is problem free, and in fact we’ve heard from a lot of our readers in regard to issues not only getting started, but also with different elements of building the house. Some players are installing Skyrim Hearthfire multiple times and can’t find the courier when entering a town, or any information on the Jarl, etc. We’ve also heard from a number of people that have seen their steward die, and then they couldn’t get a new one after that occurred.

Have you been playing Skyrim Hearthfire, and if so how has your house building been going in the second official DLC? Some PS3 and PC owners will be wishing they had an Xbox 360 right now, especially for PS3 players that lack Dawnguard with no sign of a launch.

After i’ve been playing a while, i thought of diffrent stewards.. BUT first thing i did when i noticed my new houscarl came to my land, i hired them as stewards (Yeeeees, in all 3 landplots.. Stupid..) Then i really hate that housecarls don’t sleep. Atleast Rayya doesn’t. Dont know why, i just dont like that they just stand there..

The children don’t interact with eachother more than being in the same area, and they don’t interact with my spouse either.. (Like the kids in Solitude, playing tag all the time..) And it would be nice to see the kids atleast have a chat with my spouse, and eachother ofcourse.

More on housebuilding: I haven’t found a way to re-build a house, wich i don’t like either. Ofcourse i hade to build three houses with three diffrent room combinations, only to find that i certanly don’t want some rooms, when they could be used as something better. Soo, i went for the workbench to re-build only to find out that i can’t.

But still, all over i like Hearthfire, because these “I-don’t-likes” afterall, are my own fault, since i just did stuff (Building.. hiring stweards..), and thought about it afterwards. and it’s not really that hard to create some other character(s) to make things diffrent.

That’s odd. Both my children interact with each other, though its usually fighting. And they talk about my spouse and all the things they are going to do together.
Good to know that I can build all three houses though, cause I was a little concerned that I would be missing out of some of the rooms.

Where did you get your kids then?

Well, firs one is Runa from the Orphenage in Riften, and the second one is named Sofie, and i found her selling flowers in Windhelm. Anyway, as mentiond above, i just walked in on them fighting, callin eachother names back and forth.. So i guess i was just impatient. :)

Weeeeeell, now i feel stupid, just as i enderd the house, they stood there and was just fighting. Told dem chicks to go sleep. Anyway, i haven’t seen them talk to / with my spouse thou. But this might be since i not too long ago adopted the second one.

Yeah, i build up one house with the Bedrooms, Armory and Trophyroom, wich turned out to be the one i like the most. I Also build one with the greenhouse and the kitchen and the storageroom, and… finaly, a house with three towers.. (Enchanting, Alchemy, Libary).. Just to see what it would look like… finding out that i don’t want them =P

You can rebuild you just go back to the plains and pick removal of the wing you want.

so far i am loving it. had the problem with the courier, restarted the xbox, went to an entirely different city and he popped up. still havent got a steward, the one thing i really dont like is the barells that show up even when i avoid building them.
