If there is one way to nail down the iPhone 5 release date then it’s by looking at the carriers, and the moment you see either Verizon Wireless or AT&T stopping their employees from taking holiday, then BANG you have a clear signal for when roughly Apple will launch the iPhone 5, or more officially known as the 6th generation phone. The good news is this has already happened and we have a launch window that falls in the second half of September.
We said if either one of these carriers creates a blackout on booking vacations, but you might have already seen our earlier article showing that Verizon Wireless had stopped their employees from taking time off between September 21-30. This had been enough for us to pretty much confirm the iPhone 5 release date window is between these dates, although within the last 48 hours it has been confirmed that AT&T has blocked exactly the same date range.

More than a coincidence – this is pretty remarkable and we find it really hard to doubt the iPhone 5 could launch any other time than between the 21st and 30th of next month, so if you want to trade-in your current iPhone then start getting some quotes now and work out how long the trade-in price lasts. You can read about the deal O2 has on offer here, although they only hold prices for 2 weeks.
The official iPhone 5 news will land on September 12 at an event that Apple is yet to confirm its location or even send a single invite out, and any website offering confirmed new iPhone 5 features before then is only basing those reports on rumors.
If you look at the image at the top of this page you can see what is meant to be an NFC chip inside the iPhone 5, which would allow the new hardware to benefit from commercial applications that help you make payments with Near Field Communication. You can see a bigger image of this photo over on iPhone Rumors, although some websites have since denied that this is in fact for an NFC chip. Sadly this cat and mouse game has been played with a number of rumors, although considering we have 2 weeks until the event it seems like everything will fall in place very soon.
Are you ready for an iPhone 5 or do you have to wait for your contract to end? The price is expected to be around the same as last year, but obviously with a lot more technology included and of course iOS 6 is likely to benefit from some new hardware features inside the iPhone 5. This had been seen before with iOS 5 and Siri that the 4S model featured while previous generations didn’t.
Update: We just got word that T-Mobile has issued a target for employees and some training, which focuses on September 21st for this to start, and their aim will be to learn how to sell smartphones against the iPhone. This can only add more weight to big things starting from that date.
