Xbox 720 tools sold online

How longer can Microsoft attempt to keep the their next generation Xbox ’720′ console a secret? After a recent exec slip up, it looks like some development kit owners can’t resist making a quick buck when the opportunity arises.

We say a quick buck, but actually a sum in the region of thousands of dollars. It’s no secret that Xbox 720 development kits are already in circulation along with the Sony PS4 we’re guessing, but we were surprised to find out over the weekend that someone had made the bold move in putting their kit up for sale on Ebay.

The kit, now commonly referred to as ‘Durango’, appeared on Ebay and the bid has now ended after 7 days on sale. There didn’t appear to be any guarantee of authenticity, but that didn’t stop 43 bids and a winning bid of $20,000. As you can imagine, this breaks all sorts of confidentiality agreements that Microsoft had in place and we’re willing to bet that they are currently in the process of tracking down the culprit that has decided to cash in on the company’s worst kept secret.

$20,000 is a lot of money and it just goes to show what lengths some consumers will go to, to get an early glimpse of the next generation Xbox. The picture supplied with the listing looks a lot like your bog standard PC desktop, so perhaps it’s not the end of the world for Microsoft since the final console won’t look anything like that.

Once the winning bidder receives his or her Xbox 720 developmental kit, it will be interesting to see if a multitude of leaks then follow. Or perhaps Microsoft may intercept the sending beforehand and make sure this doesn’t happen – resulting in a loss of $20,000 for nothing.

What are your thoughts on this? Are you shocked that someone would pay up to $20,000 for the Xbox 720 dev kit or not?
