Nexus S Jelly Bean update rollouts begin?

By Alan Ng - Jul 19, 2012

We have yet more good news to share with you regarding the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean rollout bandwagon. After the news broke of the GSM Galaxy Nexus getting an official update, we’re now pleased to report that it looks like the Nexus S is next in line.

This is surely going to be great news for those loyal owners who decided to stick with the Nexus S, despite the fact that the higher spec Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S3 are now above the Nexus S in the Android pecking order.

Although an official announcement hasn’t been made by Google yet, a report by Android Central claims that rollouts are due to start at the end of this week, with Vodafone Australia apparently confirming this as a done deal. However, if you do a Twitter search for Nexus S Jelly Bean, you’ll also see conflicting messages stating that Jelly Bean for the Nexus S has been delayed until further notice.

It should be out soon regardless though and it is pleasing to see Google stick to their word on their original statement. At Google I/O, they said that Android 4.1 will be available for the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S handsets first and low and behold, it’s happening.

The big question that a lot of you are asking now though, is where is the Android 4.1 update for the Galaxy S3? Now that the Nexus handsets are out of the way, excluding the LTE Galaxy Nexus on Verizon, we have a feeling that the Galaxy S3 should be next in line since it is considered the cream of the crop right now.

If you have a Nexus S, help us by confirming whether you have had any notifications in your area to upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or not.

    WIND Mobile – Toronto – Nexus S – Android 4.0.4 – SGHi9020xxki1 – IMM76D
NO Update notification yet, I have tried Clearing the Google Policy Framework App Cache, Checking in by dialling *#*#2432546#*#*
I have downloaded manually the file saved it onto the phone’s local storage, rebooted into recovery mode and it fails with STATUS 7 error.  I don’t want to root my phone to install Jelly Bean just yet as it is still under warranty.  P.S. Clearing the App Cache isn’t letting me download anything from Google Play either

No update here I’ve been checking every few hours. Nexus s 4g on sprint. Im in Minnesota !!!

    • Ben Payne

Sprint is not a GSM provider… you are going to be waiting quite a bit longer.

      • Tyler

        damn ok thanks man

      • danny

        how long would that bee?

        • Ben Payne

Sorry… I have no idea. I know that the Nexus S was released on Sprint about 4 months after the GSM version, the Android 4.0 ICS update came about 4 months later as well. I’m guessing 4 months?

        • Kjay

CDMA Nexus S didn’t get the update four months after GSM version as I recall it there was a halt in the updates causing lots of GSM owners to get the update months later or not at all. Just saying…

        • Ben Payne

It usually takes developers a bit longer on CDMA, the development for which has usually come after GSM. Am I wrong?

  • Todd Hyle

Why is Samsung the only manufacture rolling out Jelly Bean. What about all the other Android phones, like the HTC Evo 4G LTE. Why wouldn’t a Jelly Bean roll out on HTC phones? Is this just a Samsung article?

    • Ben Payne

Its not Samsung, its Google. These Nexus phones were commissioned by Google and so they get the first updates.

    • Nickan Fayyazi

As Ben Payne said, it is the Nexus line that is getting the updates. It just so happens that, as Samsung is the top phone manufacturer in both quality and number of phones sold, Google chose Samsung to make the Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus. Nexus is a line of devices made with a collaboration between Google and a manufacturer such as Samsung or Asus.
