Halo 4 install size leads to next gen storage fears

If you are planning to pick up Halo 4 this Fall, we come with a word of warning to those of you who are still rocking 20GB Xbox 360 consoles. It has been confirmed that the multiplayer portion of Halo 4 requires an 8GB install before playing.

Microsoft has posted a separate article on the Xbox website all about the requirements for 343 Industries’ upcoming effort and we’ve noticed that Microsoft are basically recommending all gamers pick up one of the official Xbox 360 USB flash drives that come in 8GB and 16GB varieties.

It was expected that Halo 4 would come with a fairly large install size, but are you surprised that multiplayer has a minimum requirement of 8GB to play? Obviously this is a complete non issue for those with a beastly hard drive, but for those that are still using the 20GB system or even the 4GB console – this may turn out to be problem, especially if Battlefield 3 has taken up a lot of space.

A further plug by Microsoft also touts the Xbox 360 Media Hard Drive, which will give you a mammoth 320GB of storage to use for all your game data, movies, music and other media preferences. It is an easy solution though if you will need to free up the space – USB flash drives are available for next to nothing these days after all.

It does pose an interesting question though when we move into next gen. Will it still be acceptable for developers to require gamers to make the changes necessary on their system to accomodate these large storage installs? This very issue may now become obsolete for Sony’s next console after their acquisition of cloud-streaming service Gaikai. Let’s hope that Microsoft is planning a similar move for the Xbox 720.

Do you have an Xbox 360 hard drive or not?
