It has only been a matter of days since the first Skyrim DLC has been released, and during our Dawnguard review we wanted to take you through the important parts step-by-step, and also help our readers solve certain aspects of the downloadable content. If you don’t want to spoil the story then stop reading now, although those of you that want to understand more about Dawnguard should keep reading.
When we first started the Skyrim expansion finding Fort Dawnguard tricked a few gamers thanks to a misplaced marker, although once through the cave you quickly get to start your first true quest, which involves the Dimhollow Crypt and a puzzle inside the Cavern. You can see our hands-on with this quest here, and also some videos if you prefer something visual.
After completing the puzzle at Dimhollow you free a girl called “Serana“, which starts the Dawnguard Bloodline quest to lead her home. It’s a long way, especially if you have not traveled way up to the northwest of Skyrim before, which takes you to a big castle that is the home of Dawnguard’s vampire lord Harkon. This is Serana’s father and as a reward you will be offered his blood and the chance to become a vampire with special powers, and loads of new perks.
This is a tempting offer from Lord Harkon, but what defines the gamer that accepts this vampire gift? We knew this offer would come and when it did the choice to be a member of the Dawnguard or a vampire wasn’t easy. We decided to hunt the vampires and this resulted in us being banished from the castle and on to the next quest, which is to speak to Isran at Fort Dawnguard.
The photo above is a screenshot right at the moment you have to make a choice that defines the future of your Dawnguard game. What choice did you make at that point?
We’re not sure why we decided to hunt the vampires, but seeing them eat bodies on the tables might have had something to do with it. The good news is that we can create a new save file at that point and make a different choice, which is something we are likely to do after completing Dawnguard as a good guy, especially considering how nice Serana seems.
You can see a video below that shows the moment you arrive at Castle Volkihar, which runs for 5 minutes and includes the offer from the vampire lord Harkon.
