The last couple of weeks have included some of the most solid next-gen Xbox rumors we’ve seen in a long time, and after the leaked Xbox 720 documents that appeared last week we’re now seeing some analysis on the release date, which takes into account the latest information.
The Wedbush Securities analyst, Michael Pachter, normally receives a hot and cold welcome from gamers thanks to some reporting that has resulted in certain predictions being wrong, although it is worth pointing out that Pachter has been spot on as well. This time we see his prediction in relation to the Xbox 720 release date, which came after this popular magazine asked when will next-gen arrive?
Microsoft does share information about the next Xbox with some publishers/developers, under an NDA, so it is expected that some details will leak about its launch. In Pachter’s opinion the next Xbox will not arrive in 2013 thanks to the amount of products and services still launching to prepare for next-generation. The Xbox 720 will land in Spring 2014, although how much you trust this timeframe depends on the amount you value Pachter’s predictions.
While we would prefer to see an Xbox 720 sooner rather than later, it does make sense for Microsoft to showcase the new technology at E3 2013, and then set a release for early 2014. Would you be happy if this turned out to be spot on?
There are also predictions surrounding what Microsoft has planned for the future of Xbox, and the recent announcement of SmartGlass does lean towards the possibility that we could see Windows 8 on the Xbox 720 taking care of multiple TV signals, which would create both a gaming machine and cable TV box that providers could subsidize to get your TV viewing business, which might allow for a subsidized price of around $99.
How do you feel about the Xbox 720 being your main cable TV box and gaming device, or do you want Microsoft to focus more on gaming and less on TV services? It’s worth pointing out that the recently leaked Xbox 720 documents didn’t show this cable TV plan, but then those docs are 2 years old.
