Technology enthusiasts are wondering what the big Microsoft announcement will be today at a secret press conference in LA, which saw invites sent out last week. The guessing game started the moment we heard about invites although it has intensified today, and predictions are focusing on a new Windows 8 tablet although some analysts think there will be a focus on innovation.
How could Microsoft innovate with a Windows 8 tablet? MCV UK has studied the rumors and come to the conclusion that we could see an Xbox Live streaming tablet today, which could stream games and lot more to a new Microsoft tablet. While this sounds amazing and would be innovative it is also likely wrong, and the above article has since updated their post clarifying that this rumor could mean streaming of movies only, which is nothing special when compared to Xbox 360 games being streamed.
While most blogs and media outlets are following the rumor mill along the lines of Microsoft launching a device manufactured by themselves, another article on TechCrunch believe they have found the real story, which includes a partnership with Barnes and Noble. This is part of a partnership that saw Microsoft invest $300 million, although their share will be 17.6% compared to Barnes and Noble’s 82.4% equity stake.
Multiple sources are pointing to a new tablet and considering the varied sources this is a pretty solid rumor, although how far the Xbox Live integration goes will be the real dealbreaker. This would be the first non-Xbox device to gain the ability to stream Xbox Live, but to make it groundbreaking it needs to bring something truly special for the Xbox gamer.
Microsoft’s June 18 press conference has a start time of 3:30pm PDT, although the location will be announced at 10am. Keep connected to PR on Facebook and Twitter for more details as this story unfolds. We’ll update this post in a few hours when the location is announced.
