For those of you that are not aware of what Peter Molyneux is up to since his departure from Lionhead and Microsoft, we can tell you that his next project will be called Curiosity. Billed as a ‘social media’ game for iOS and PC, the outspoken developer has revealed that the game will feature a piece of DLC that costs an outrageous £50,000 to buy.
We’re not kidding either. This is going to be a real thing and Molyneux has recently said that the reason he is doing such a thing is to ‘test the psychology of monetization’. The game will be tailored around a large cube, which players have to chisel away at in order to get to the center.
The center of the cube contains a mystery prize and players are able to see other players working away at other pieces of the cube. Here’s where that £50,000 piece of DLC comes in. Players are equipped with a default chisel, but can purchase other chisels that are more powerful and can hack away at the cube at a faster rate. A more powerful chisel can be bought for £0.59p that has 10x the strength of the default, but there’s also the amusing £50,000 chisel that has a power rate of 100,000x the original chisel.
Sounds crazy doesn’t it? All we can say is that the prize for getting to the center of the cube must be a big one, if they are teasing players with a DLC that costs a vast fortune to buy. Then again, social media combined with the internet is a dangerous combination and who’s to bet that there isn’t going to be some crazy individual with more money than sense who will fork out on this DLC just for the fun of it.
