If you thought rumors surrounding future iPad models would now start to quieten down with the upcoming release of the third-generation model now dubbed ‘The New iPad‘, think again. We’re hearing whispers this week that Apple may already be focusing on their next effort which could release at the end of the year.
This isn’t your average Apple rumor though, as it comes with an interesting twist. The Korea Times has published a article claiming that Apple are pressing forward on a new 7.85-inch iPad which will be available towards the end of 2012, as noted by Apple Insider. The twist though is that this information has apparently come from a Samsung official – oh the irony.
This isn’t the first time that we have heard about a smaller iPad variant, actually it was just prior to Apple’s recent iPad event that we told you about the ‘mini’ iPad rumors, with the source again coming from Korea at the time and production on the model apparently scheduled for the third quarter of 2012.
How will a smaller iPad be met by the consumer though? If Apple are going to win customers over with another iPad in 2012 after the majority have just forked out on ‘the New iPad’, they are going to have to include a number of additions. A smaller form factor would be great of course, but we’re hoping that this includes cutting down on the bulk as well. A lighter iPad should always be one of Apple’s priorities in our opinion.
Then there is also the ongoing debate about the processor. It almost seemed certain at one point that the third-generation iPad would ship with a quad-core processor, but instead we ended up with the A5X – a new and improved version of the A5 chip seen in the iPad 2, but still only dual-core based. With the ASUS Transformer Prime and other tablets now showing Apple how it is done in the quad-core market at the moment, we are seemingly nearing towards the point where Apple will finally unleash their quad-core A6 chip.
Don’t be surprised if this 7.85-inch variant turns out to be the official ‘iPad 3’ by name either. Apple surprised everyone with the ‘new iPad’ name branding, so we have a feeling that we will see an iPad 3 before we see the ‘iPad 4’ – especially if they follow the same pattern as they have with the iPhone 3G, 3G, 4 and 4S smartphones.
Samsung may be embroiled in a legal tussle with Apple in the patent war, but it seems that Samsung insiders don’t mind dishing out rumors to get Apple fans excited all over again. If you are already looking beyond the new iPad, let us know what you would like to see in the fourth generation model. It has to be quad-core surely?
