Specs for new Ice Cream Sandwich optimized Broadcom Platforms

A few days ago we told you all about Qualcomm’s new S4 MSM8960 Snapdragon SoC, today we have all the details regarding Broadcom’s newest platforms – all of which are being marketed as optimized for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

In this brief article we will tell you everything you need to know about the BCM28145, BCM28155 and the BCM21654G. All of these SoC’s are expected to hit smartphone manufacturers in the latter half of 2012 and all the chip options utilize a low power 40nm process in conjunction with RF (radio frequency), PMU (power management unit) and a wide means of connectivity.

The BCM28145 and BCM28155 are very similar as they both boast a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor with a clock speed of up to 1.3GHz per core, they both make the most of something called VideoCore technology – full details regarding this tech haven’t yet been divulged but to our understanding this tech is something built into the platform which allows the application processor to offload tasks to a third processing core. This all sounds pretty complicated, but from what we can see this means that graphical and image processing is undertaken by this ‘third processing core’ which boasts extremely low power consumption for such tasks.

The main difference between the BCM28145 and BCM28155 is that they support 720p and 1080p HD video respectively. They both offer 21Mbps down / 5.8Mbps HSPA+ connectivity, dual-band Wi-Fi (which allows support for Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Display), Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and GPS+GLONASS – there’s no LTE connectivity by the looks of things, but that’s because these new platforms are aimed towards OEMs looking for a premium Android 4.0 experience at low cost. If you are not connecting to HSPA+ this platform falls back on Class 33 EDGE connectivity.

Other features worth a quick mention include a low-latency architecture for a responsive UI, 3G/2G dual-SIM support, Broadcom’s InConcert technology to minimize interference between the connectivity subsystem and Broadcom’s latest Image Signal Processor, this supports sensors of up to 42 megapixels and is said to boast great low-light results and sharp images at dynamic ranges.

The Broadcom BCM21654G platform isn’t as advanced as the other two platform’s which we’ve spoken about in this article, therefore we think we’ll see it utilized in mid to low-end smartphones in 2012, the good news is that you’ll get a 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor, low-power VGA video support and HSPA (no plus) connectivity (7.2Mbps down / 5.6Mbps up).

As you can see all of the platforms which Broadcom has unveiled seem to tackle a problem which many Android devices suffer (high power-consumption during graphical and image processing) – perhaps this will mean we’ll soon be able to capture video and photos a, view them multiple times and play games without such battery-related worries – we sure hope so!
