Currently if you want fast internet connectivity at home in the United Kingdom almost all solutions available require a home telephone line, not only do you have to pay line rental but you have to wait for your line to go live and then see out your contract which means that things get complicated if you move house. Now that its 2012 we are happy to tell you that there is a much simpler solution, this is the Three Web Cube.
So what’s the Three Web Cube? Well basically it is a lot like a wireless router, however it doesn’t connect to broadband via a telephone line, simply plug it into the mains and it connects to Three UK’s HSPA+ mobile network via the SIM card which comes installed upon purchase, it then beams out a wireless connection in your home so computers, laptops, netbooks, tablets, smartphones, smart TVs and consoles can connect to it – neat eh?
Speeds vary depending on your location, however when we tested out Three’s Huawei E586 MiFi which offers HSPA+ connectivity we achieved sustainable speeds of 5.55Mbps down and 1.58Mbps up, the download speeds were a little slower than home broadband, but the upload speeds were much faster. The good news is that in stronger signal areas you can see download speeds of up 10Mbps.
What’s great about the Web Cube is that you can take it with you, so if you move house, go to a friends or need internet connectivity at a temporary location it’s fine, just unplug it from the wall and plug it in wherever there’s a power socket and signal (Three’s mobile network has won awards in the UK so should cover most areas) and you’re ready to go.
There’s two simple pricing options available, if you want a one-month rolling contract you must pay £59.99 upfront for the Web Cube and then £15 a month for 10GB of data. Alternatively you can agree a two-year deal and get the Web Cube free, this will cost you £15.99 per month and give you 15GB of data per month – this is more than enough for the majority of users out there who just use the Internet for web browsing, watching a few videos here and there and email – in fact if I didn’t stream films via Netflix and game over Xbox Live I would strongly consider the Web Cube as I would be saving money each month.
The Three Web Cube should not be seen as an alternative to dongles and MiFi solutions, instead it should be seen as a home broadband solution which isn’t tied down to a single home, we hope that in the future an all-you-can-eat data tariff will be available as this could seriously shake up UK broadband prices in the future. Currently the Web Cube is being tested out across the UK, therefore it won’t be publicly available until beta testing is complete, we have been promised a Web Cube to test out in the future so watch this space!
