Skyrim patch 1.4 beta problems & framerate improvements

By Posted 25 Jan 2012, 13:02

Recently we told you that the beta version of patch 1.4.15 for Skyrim had gone live, well today we thought we would look into how well this update had been received by the community and look into issues which people have been reporting post update. There’s bound to be some problems given that the patch is in its beta stages, but it is good to point out issues which Bethesda Softworks need to be aware of.

Before we start talking negatively about the update we must point out that on the whole people seem pretty happy with the patch, one change which we have seen very positive feedback for is the jump in framerate which some people have reported. The official patch notes suggested that there would be better performance due to optimizations, well this turned out to be quite an understatement as people commenting on this thread over at the BethSoft forums are reporting massive framerate increases, especially in cities like Whiterun and inside buildings.

The bad news is that there are some reports of issues, firstly there’s reports of graphics ‘hitching’ post update (never occurred playing Skyrim 1.3) whilst another gamer says that since installing the update his game as crashed to the desktop (CTD) multiple times with no real pattern – this could be a fault specific to his hardware setup and configuration, however there are three reports of similar problems here. This thread over at the forums has 18 replies in regards to patch 1.4 BSOD and CTD problems, the people commenting are very knowledgeable so it may serve as a useful resource if you come across similar issues.

The final problem we will talk about is sound-related, apparently the game’s wind sound effect is sometimes very loud which is a nuisance, you can see all reports of the issue here and as you can see there’s three pages of replies, many say that the there is no pattern as to when the loud noise occurs, but most say it occurs when viewing the world map.

As this is a beta update we won’t worry about these issues too much as we expect them to be squashed by the time the update is rolled-out officially, you can leave your own feedback on the patch in this thread and reports minor beta bugs and changes which weren’t in the changelog here, for now why don’t you tell us of any problems you have experience with the beta patch in the comments section below.

Are you happy with the beta version of patch 1.4? Did your framerate increase significantly? Let us know!

What a joke this really is. 3 months after release and it’s almost as though the game (for some) is still in development stages. It’s just downright ridiculous. The public, who play £40 for the product, are basically beta testers. My brother applied for the Game Analyst role at Rockstar Games – I’m pretty sure that if he gets the job and plays GTA 5 whilst it’s still in the development stage, the unfinished Rockstar title will probably run smoother than the supposed “finished product” that is Skyrim. What makes it even more of a joke is that the entire gaming community just shrugs its shoulders and accepts it because its the almighty Bethesda.

Not because it is almighty Bethesda.  No.  I am angry at them for porting over an Xbox version to the pc and treating me like I am crazy for calling tech support and askiing about 3 monitor support, which Oblivion had.  And Skyui saved us pc people from that blasted lousy user interface that was a slap in the face.  BUT, arguably they have no equal in what they do.  It is the closest to the old games like Bard’s Tale, Ultima, Might and Magic.  When we factor in the amazing graphics and scope of the game, attention to fine detail,  we make a choice to support them because otherwise we would be stuck with linear boring rpgs and action games.   What we need to do is get organized as users and communicate to the company our issues with the game and company in general.  But it should be constructive criticism and not just a bashing party.

Is there a bashing party? Sign me up. It’s obvious they’re getting the market to beta test their product, rather then do it themselves. There’s support is crap; you can list the details of the prob, give the dxdiag report etc – wait patiently a few weeks. And you get zip nada support from these guys.

Nice one Bethesda!! Personally I think you’re doing a great job.

Ive not had a CTD since 1.3 came out (including this new 1.4beta)
I play at 1600×900 all ingame gfx settings maxed fxaa on, 2X AntiAlaising, 8x Anisotropic filtering with 2K HD textures mod along with 18 more mods.

Ive really not had many issues with this game at all since its release. There were a few funny bugs in the first 10 or so hours, such as mammoths occasionally spawning in the sky, but nothing game breaking.
I had 5 or 6 CTD in the first 100 hours play then v1.3 came out and no more since then after clocking a total of 210 hours play.

I used to get a little bit of stuttering in the towns but nothing at all serious and I stopped this from happening by forcing it to run at 40fps via gfx driver.
1.4b has vastly improved performance, I no longer cap the game to 40fps and it seems to have no trouble maintaining a solid 60fps (v-sync limit) Ive not encountered any added problems since 1.4b but a couple of miner’ish bugs remain. Weapon rack in Breezehome still drops my weapons (well staffs anyway) and wearing archmage robe with a mask still causes head to disappear.

Otherwise all is good for me, Ive not run into any broken quests even on my 3rd run through the game.

My specs for the curious are:

    i7 930 @ stock (2.8ghz- i think)
    2X GTX 460 (sli)
    6GB ram 1600mhz
    win 7 64-bit
creative usb X-fi audio (proper name escapes me)

Glad to hear it’s working for you as well. In case you read this, you’d notice a significant increase in visual quality by going up to 16x anisotropy (disable in-game, force via CP – should have 0 performance cost on your system), and bumping up to 4x AA (if you can afford the frames – disable vsync if not, since it provides absolutely no quality benefit in the sub-100s fps range, while still sapping performance.)

The 1.4 solved the “Blood on the Ice” quest and a couple of over quest related CTD issues. I’m going to check also on the quests where you are asked to kill stuff that got killed already and there ain’t no respawn to kill again.

What I’ve noticed though is the graphics freeze frequently now, the audio will continue as usually but the game freezes. You have to alt tab or select ‘switch’ on the task manager to keep moving. About 3-4 times every 25 minutes or so. Didn’t have it on 1.3. I’ll switch back to 1.3 after I’ve checked the rest.
