Sony Xperia Ion: Contender for best camera of 2012

By Updated on

We have some more feedback on Sony’s new head-turning Android handset which they unveiled at CES 2012, the Xperia Ion. We previously gave you an introduction to the impressive specs featured on the device, but now we have a video to show you which specifically focuses on the camera side of the Ion.

You’ll be pleased to know that Sony has already allowed the public to get their hands on the device at CES, and the video we have to show you gives you an idea just how impressive it is, as we may be seeing an early glance at the device which features the best camera seen in a smartphone this year.

The camera on the Xperia Ion operates in a different way to other smartphones on the market, as Sony are touting one of its new features called ‘fast capture’, which allows the user to take an image quickly even when the phone is in sleep state. We have seen similar attempts by Apple and Google to enable fast picture taking with the iPhone 4S and Galaxy Nexus from a lock screen, but the Sony Xperia Ion is easily the best seen so far.

To give you an idea of just how quick it can take a picture, the guys at Phandroid have taken a very useful video at CES, in which they compare the speed of taking a picture on the new Sony Xperia Ion and the Galaxy Nexus. One feature that comes included with Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 is zero shutter, which allows devices such as the Galaxy Nexus to take a quick picture from the lock screen. However, when put to the test against the Xperia Ion, you’ll see that the Sony device really does take a picture instantly from sleep mode, whereas the user will still need to unlock the Galaxy Nexus and wait for the phone to load up the camera app.

It is impressive stuff and great news for keen smartphone photographers who like to take spontaneous pictures. The Ion will also feature a 12.1 megapixel sensor as well, so actual picture quality is expected to be first class as well. We’ll try to bring you more footage of the Ion in action soon, but let us know your initial impressions of the device so far.
