PS Vita: Augmented Reality gameplay demo

By Updated on

Earlier this week, we spoke about the PS Vita being much more than a standard gaming handheld, with the addition of movie streaming service Netflix, as well as Sony’s own Music Unlimited as well. Now though, we have a preview of another interesting capability that the Vita will be able to support, and that’s augmented reality.

Augmented reality isn’t a new technology of course, as you may have seen AR cards in action on the Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo’s system only supports the use of one card at a time though to display an image, but Sony’s PS Vita improves on the rising technology further, by allowing multiple cards to be used at once, using an official term known as ‘WAAR’ – Wide-Area Augmented Reality.

To give you an example of how the PS Vita makes use of multiple AR cards at once, Sony has released a very interesting video taken this week at CES, in which we get a preview of the upcoming Table Football game, in which players can use everyday locations such as a coffee table to set up an instant game of football using as many as six cards.

Each card enhances gameplay such as making a stadium bigger, adding scorecards and it all looks rather impressive. This is the first time that we’ve seen Table Football in action, but don’t forget that Sony also has a collection of other AR games ready for the US PS Vita launch on February 22nd, most of which will be a free download from the app store.

The technology hasn’t really come alive yet, but these games on the Vita show real promise in taking portable gaming to the next level. Check out the video from CES below and let us know if you are impressed by the technology. Does the AR featured on the PS Vita blow the Nintendo 3DS AR out of the water in your opinion?
