Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE: Sprint joins party, Verizon looks on

Sprint’s 4G LTE network is just getting up and running but now, they can boast two new smartphones which will see them compete with the likes of AT&T and Verizon. After previously only having a 4G WiMAX network to call upon, Sprint consumers can now get their hands on a 4G LTE supported Galaxy Nexus, along with a new handset, the LG Viper.

After the initial delay over the release of the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon, consumers started to wonder if Big Red had an exclusive on the Galaxy Nexus as initially thought, but Sprint’s announcement at CES now confirms that Google’s first Ice Cream Sandwich handset isn’t exclusive to Verizon and will now be available on Sprint.

There’s no indication on when the handset will be available, but there is now a sign-up page which you can register for here on Sprint’s website, which also confirms that Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Atlanta will be the first areas to receive 4G LTE, when Sprint launches their new network during the second half of 2012.

As for differences between the Verizon and Sprint Galaxy Nexus, we can tell you that it is largely the same handset for both networks, but you may be interested to hear that Sprint’s version will come with official support for Google Wallet, unlike the Verizon Galaxy Nexus which ‘blocked’ Google Wallet.

The Galaxy Nexus will be joined by a second 4G LTE handset, the LG Viper, which features a 4-inch display, 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, NFC chip, a 5 megapixel camera and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. We have a feeling that all the talk is going to be reserved for the Galaxy Nexus though, as its arrival on Sprint will be seen as a major coup for both consumers and the company.

What are your thoughts on the arrival of the G Nexus on Sprint – will you now make preparations to switch handsets to the Galaxy Nexus? We may still see a further announcement of a 4G LTE Galaxy Note on Sprint, so stay tuned for further news coming out of CES 2012.
