Record breaking app downloads have occurred over the Christmas holidays it seems suggesting that a lot of people got something very special wrapped under their Christmas trees. According to a recent study that was carried out, over a billion iOS and Android apps were downloaded in the last week of December, an all-time high.
Approximately 1.2 billion apps were downloaded to be more precise, all in a single week alone, breaking the record for the most apps downloaded in one week. As explained by the Inquirer the reasons for this are down to many people receiving new devices for Christmas as well as many stores offering discounts over the holiday season.
Those in the US accounted for the majority of downloads with 509 million, nearly half of the total amount coming from there. Another large chunk of the total came from China with 99 million downloads accounted for and the UK also provided a large amount of the sum with 81 million apps being downloaded there. Both France and Germany followed with a total of 80 million apps downloaded between them.
Reports suggest that this amount of download activity may become more frequent in future as long as the growth of iOS and Android continues as it has been. Christmas 2011 also saw an all-time high as far as new devices were concerned, making the news even less surprising. Although exact figures are hard to get a hold of due to Apple’s discreteness, an estimated 7 million iPhones and Android devices were activated on Christmas day.
Were you one of the lucky many that received an iOS or Android device this Christmas? How many app downloads did you account for over the Christmas holidays?
