PS4, Xbox 720 app stores may follow Nintendo Wii U

By Posted 3 Jan 2012, 10:14

We have not had any concrete details on the PlayStation 4 or Microsoft’s next Xbox console, but since the Nintendo Wii U is now official and perhaps planning to make another appearance at the upcoming CES event, we have now heard a few more details about Nintendo’s new innovative project, which will shake up the gaming industry next year.

The Wii U is bound to raise one or two eyebrows when it launches in the second half of 2012, thanks to its unique controller design which comprises of a tablet style controller fitted with a personal 6.2-inch screen along with standard buttons for gaming on a television.

While the majority of interested fans await to see what the true graphics quality is like for the Wii U, we have heard recently that the console along with the controller will also come with another intriguing feature – a fully-fledged app store from Nintendo. An article over at The Daily claims that Nintendo are planning to include this app store in their new console and that it will provide users with content such as MLB.TV and will include support for apps to run on the touchscreen controller, without the need for a television.

It is no secret that the app store has become very popular within consumers, and credit really has to go to Apple and their App Store which continues to be the benchmark for all other companies as they look to compete in this market. If it is true that Nintendo are planning to include an App Store with the Wii U, we wouldn’t be surprised if Sony and Microsoft follow-suit and announce similar features for their upcoming next generation consoles as well. Microsoft already has their Windows Phone marketplace which they can integrate into the next Xbox, but Sony may be looking for a new approach to deliver apps to PlayStation users, other than the rather bland method used at the moment, as seen on the PS3′s outdated XMB interface.

Do you think it is inevitable that the upcoming consoles from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo will include a separate app store for useful programs aside from gaming marketplaces?
