Our daily visit to our search engine of choice had another surprise waiting for us in the form of a Google Doodle to celebrate the birthday of Robert Noyce. As a fitting tribute the image on Google’s homepage is of a microchip – well he is the Mayor of Silicon Valley. The great man would have been 84 today.
There’s nothing special to say about today’s Doodle, although on the printed circuit you can see Google taking pride of place. It’s a nice gesture for the biggest invention for electronics to be celebrated by one of the largest companies in the technology business.
Noyce co-invented the integrated circuit with friend Jack Kilby, Noyce also went on to be the co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor and then Intel Corporation. However, he was also tied to a number of other companies in an advisory role, as well as an investor to others.
It was when Robert Noyce left Fairchild Semiconductor that he co-founded Intel, which we have to be thankful for, where would we be now if there was no Intel? Noyce started something that we have seen the likes of Google follow, and that was to treat his workers as though they were family – not sure if Intel will still apply the same ethic now?
He had a great vision of how he would have liked to shape the US, and it all starts with the young. Preparing them for the future was very important to him, no matter what their background was. We would have liked to see him take up a position in today’s US government, maybe he could have taught the politician’s a thing or two about putting more in than you take out?
